dFloyd, I can play BF2 demo with highest settings at 1280x1024.
It might be a slow processor or lack of RAM that will slow your frame rates.

No, it isn't. You're comparing a 5 yeard old game that only you and Ben give a crap about to a modern game with cutting edge features that has been in the benchmarking spotlight since it was released last year.

I had never heard about 'sac' until the other day for whatever that's worth, and you'll never find ANYONE who could say that about farcry...

because you deem it so? don't think so. in fact, the real difference is that the far cry issue is far less a problem than the sacrifice one, as it affected much more and had gone on much longer.

also, the fact that ati ignored the problem so long doesn't make it right.. i suppose if nvidia continues to ignore this forever it will make it all right as well? far cry is 2 years old already, and while a few still use it to benchmark, it's not nearly as important of a game as some would like to make it seem. unless you can show some statistics that many people are playing it, i'll stick with the assertion it's hardly played at all...

i'm sure you will 2-3 years from now...

at any rate, sacrifice was a decent success commercially, and got great review. it was also pretty cutting edge gfx-wise at the time, and was included in some benchmarks as well. it was a bit "odd" in terms of gameplay, and while perhaps not mainstream (sometimes originality has it's downsides) its gameplay was critically acclaimed.

iirc it was one of, if not the first rts that was rendered in 3d, and was visually impressive:

Sacrifice is also an undeniably impressive-looking game. From the fantastic, brightly colored terrain, to the bizarre creatures, to the incredible spell effects, virtually everything in Sacrifice looks great. You'll notice small details, such as individual flowers growing in the verdant...

screenshots if you're interested...

that does look kinda funky. But i honestly think you are playing down farcry, what does it tell you that this thread has recieved the response it has, and that just about EVERY review site uses it as a benchmark...?

Anyone tried running in opengl mode instead? I would try but got an ATI card. Didn't read through all of it.
Edit system.cfg change r_driver Direct3D9 to r_driver OpenGL

Hmm...good suggestion, I don't think any of us have tried that (just the SM2 path in DX9)...might be something to give a shot anyway.

This is EXACTLY why I havent yet "pulled the trigger" on the 7800gt I was looking at earlier today, the $290AR tigerdirect deal. This kind of thing would drive me crazy.

I e-mailed The Inquirer about this and got a reply... "Interesting Jeff... I'll set my hounds on this one."

downplaying it? that depends... are we talking relevance as a game or as a benchmark? as a game, it's time is for the most part past.. as a benchmark, not as much as i think since it was the first to incorporate sm3 shaders (even tho very little and after the game shipped) and therefore still holds relevance.

as for this thread, it's hardly conclusive one way or the other. take away those that will find any reason to jump on nvidia, and you are left with as many ppl saying, "whoa i never even noticed that" as those really concerned it affects their gaming enjoyment.

in the end, it's not so much that i'm downplaying it as it is trying to add some perspective

If they can't get any straight answers, I'm hoping they can at least publish an article about it and embarass nVidia into doing something.

Yes I did try that (page 7 of this thread).

Tried forcing SM2, but it didn't help.

Tried OpenGL, but it didn't help. Actually, OpenGL was quite messed up.

This thread makes me want to buy a X1800XL instead...

You have to admit that ATI seems to stress IQ more than nVidia (which stresses FPS).

Me too Meelk. I was seriously considering picking one up but this issue would drive me nuts as well.

Great job Jeff, hopefully the hounds will sniff out some good info

You mean by not supporting DST?

Futuremark implemented it a lot better than Crytek did.

Maybe you should clean your monitor if you can't see shadows in that picture.
