my framerate was unaffected in places that DIDNT have shadows on my gun/hands... just whenever i got a shadow on my hand, BOOM it was like i was doing the CPU test in 3dmark06, a frame every couple seconds i would try it on my 7600gt but I dont have FC installed on this computer

Anyhow, have been reading up on tweak guides and came across the following

iShadowMapResolution=1024 - This variable determines the resolution of the shadow maps. By lowering this value (always using a multiple of 8), you can gain significant FPS in areas with dynamic shadows in return for much 'rougher' looking shadows. For example, try a value of 128 to see the performance and image quality impact.

I did some experimenting and noticed that setting this value to 512 or below gives shadow results quite similar to what is seen in farcry. So, I suggest people familiar with farcry's variables and parameters find an equivelant command in farcry and you may just find a solution to the ugly shadow problem.

So it is a game error? If it is happening to one type of hardware but not the other why should the shadow map resoultion in the application be at fault?

Well, if it is the game setting the shadow resolution, it can hardly be a driver fault, can it? ...

I guess the only way to know is if someone with an ATI card checks to see if the application value is the same as someone with an Nvidia card. I would think that the application would still apply the same values (Oblivion's "uGridstoLoad is 5 I believe at default on both ATI and Nvidia) no matter what kind of hardware is trying to run it.

I believe it is more of a driver problem than an incorrect application setting in a config file. I guess the first step is to see which type of error it really is.

I'll install Far Cry later on tonight and see what my shadow value is.

Did we ever get someone with a FX series card to see if they had teh same problems? This thread is so fscking huge i've forgotten

Anyways, can someone with a FX5900 or FX5700 (or indeed any other FX series card) try it out, with the same settings as used in the OP (res doesn't really matter, as long as it's at least 1024)...

You would have to ask 3 days after I sold off my 5900XT, wouldn't you?!

Going from memory I think the issue was present, but I can't be 100% certain about that without actually testing.
