Maybe you should clean your monitor if you can't see shadows in that picture.

Actually I was stating thats how I could fix them on my 6800 GT. I don't know what you did cause you're too cool to tell us. I was calling your BS, If you have you have a 6 or 7 series geforce

woohoo HDR.

So you are saying that all this bickering about the "poor NVIDIA IQ" in farcry, was due to a GAME-SETTING(in the system.cfg)?
Not something in the driver?

Terra - I will now read the thread again, and laugh at those "jumping the gun", thx mate

yes, sir. on both.

pxc - wondering why such a simple fix is so "hard"

----------
Someone who is having the problem with bad shadows (6800/7800): post your system.cfg and i'll show you how to fix it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! BTW, I tried altering all of the shadow related items by 1 value both ways to see if there was any difference.

Well, then I am off to do a "shadow" hunt i FarCry's system.cfg, thx for the heads up
I might even make a new video *L*

Terra - Infact I havn't touched Farcry since I made the "HDR vs no-HDR video"

Here's mine

Excellent work if you have solved the problem mate

Is it 'shadow blur'? EDIT: changed it to 7 from 2, no noticeable change, so it's not that, tried setting stencil shadows to 0 from 1, no noticeable change, tried changing 'active shadow maps receving (earlier in the thread), no improvement, i give up, spill the beans

because you deem it so?
No, not because I deem it so, because it is so.

and while a few still use it to benchmark,
Almost every hardware website still uses it as a benchmark not to mention that the engine is a constant state of development (new patch expected to improve HDR in a few weeks), unlike Sacrifice which stopped development 5 years ago.

it's not nearly as important of a game as some would like to make it seem.
That's your flawed interpretation of the situation, one that is not shared by online forms, hardware websites or by reality itself.

at any rate, sacrifice was a decent success commercially, and got great review.
it was also pretty cutting edge gfx-wise at the time,
its gameplay was critically acclaimed.
So was/is Farcry and so were hundreds of other titles released over the last 5 years. What's your point?

and was included in some benchmarks as well.
Far Cry was benchmarked and analysed more in its first month of release than Sacrifice has been combined in its 5 year existance. Also every major hardware website continues to benchmark Far Cry as it's pretty much mandatory for a hardware review these days.

iirc it was one of, if not the first rts that was rendered in 3d, and was visually impressive:
Actually no, Myth already did that way back in 1997. Also Total Annihilation in 1998 or so. But that's neither here nor there since this topic has absolutely nothing to do with nostalgic delusions of ancient RTSes which have zero relevance to anything today.

downplaying it? that depends... are we talking relevance as a game or as a benchmark? as a game, it's time is for the most part past.. as a benchmark, not as much as i think since it was the first to incorporate sm3 shaders (even tho very little and after the game shipped) and therefore still holds relevance.
And what relevance does a 5 year old RTS called Sacrifice have?

unless you can show some statistics that many people are playing it, i'll stick with the assertion it's hardly played at all...
And what statistics do you have that Sacrifice is still being played? For that matter what does playing a game have to do with anything?

If you want to reminisce about a five year old game which only you and Ben care about it then start another thread about it instead of trolling in this one. And when you start it I'll be sure to pop in and start talking about Pong and Tetris and claim it's just as relevant as Sacrifice is.

actually, that's incorrect. the game was released 11/00 and at least one patch followed the following year.. but again you're missing the point.

comparing in relative terms, this ati issue existed in the same relative life of the game, so saying it's okay now BS; the problem existed back then, and still does today.
That's your flawed interpretation of the situation, one that is not shared by online forms, hardware websites or by reality itself.
again it's your perspective not based on any facts. there's perhaps only a dozen active topics on the far cry forum, and even running a seach in their tech forum, there's only 1 complaint of the issue that's being discussed here, and it only received one reply stating it's a 1.1 patch bug. seems that would indicate how "important" this really is... after all, this is on ubisofts far cry forum, which is frequented by those that ACTUALLY play the game.
So was/is Farcry and so were hundreds of other titles released over the last 5 years. What's your point?
something you're apparently incapable of comprehending -- that this is not a big deal, and far more serious issues were completely ignored by a competing gfx card company. if you're going to hold nvidia accountable for this (somewhat minor) issue, you should certainly hold ati accountable for a far more serious one.
Far Cry was benchmarked and analysed more in its first month of release than Sacrifice has been combined in its 5 year existance. Also every major hardware website continues to benchmark Far Cry as it's pretty much mandatory for a hardware review these days.
it's not mandatory at all. but sure, it's been used heavily as a benchmark, but it's not much more relevant than say using q3arena or ut as a benchmark -- there are much more demanding games avail which better reflect current gen. gfx card capabilites.
Actually no, Myth already did that way back in 1997. Also Total Annihilation in 1998 or so. But that's neither here nor there since this topic has absolutely nothing to do with nostalgic delusions of ancient RTSes which have zero relevance to anything today.
again, because you don't deem it relevant certainly does not make it so.. and i'd agree on myth, but total annihilation (which was a great game imo) was a different (top down, rather than 3rd person) perspecitve.
And what relevance does a 5 year old RTS called Sacrifice have?
certainly you're intelligent enough to not have to ask that?
And what statistics do you have that Sacrifice is still being played? For that matter what does playing a game have to do with anything?
you sir are the one making claims as to the popularity of far cry (i certainly never stated anything about sacrifice in that regard); i just asked you to support your claim, so rather than evading the question with a question, why not just answer it?
If you want to reminisce about a five year old game which only you and Ben care about it then start another thread about it instead of trolling in this one. And when you start it I'll be sure to pop in and start talking about Pong and Tetris and claim it's just as relevant as Sacrifice is.
coming from one of the more obvious trolls on these forums, i find your request a bit hypocritical.

Sorry, but this should not have to be edited in a game file to fix. Especially from a NV supported game. Most consumers who buy a game, have no idea how to edit a game file, and would never even know to look on some forum to find this fix. Either Crytek, or NV needs to have this fixed by default.

It's probably just a picture from someone's ATI card.

actually, that's incorrect. the game was released 11/00 and at least one patch followed the following year..
Yes but Pong was released in '76 and has had numerous revisions since then.

comparing in relative terms, this ati issue existed in the same relative life of the game, so saying it's okay now BS; the problem existed back then, and still does today.
This has what to do with Far Cry's shadowing problems?

there's perhaps only a dozen active topics on the far cry forum,
(1) That's a dozen more than active Sacrifice topics.
(2) So what? What does the number of active topics in a given forum have to do with anything?

after all, this is on ubisofts far cry forum, which is frequented by those that ACTUALLY play the game.
Riiiight, because we all know that anyone not posting in Ubisoft's forum can't possibly be a Far Cry player.

but it's not much more relevant than say using q3arena or ut as a benchmark
This is nothing more than blatant BS and you know it.

there are much more demanding games avail which better reflect current gen. gfx card capabilites.
You mean like Sacrfice?

again, because you don't deem it relevant certainly does not make it so..
You mean like Far Cry's shadowing issue and your trolling in this thread because there are "only" a dozen active Ubisoft topics?

certainly you're intelligent enough to not have to ask that?
Answer: no relevance whatsoever. I still can't figure out if you're just an nVidia troll trying to downplay the problems in a TWIMTBP title or if you just enjoy spamming threads in general.

you sir are the one making claims as to the popularity of far cry
Nonsense. This thread is a discussion about Far Cry's shadowing issues. You popped into the thread and claimed that because Far Cry isn't "popular" the issue is somehow not relevant but in fact a 5 year old game that you pulled out of who knows where is more relevant.

coming from one of the more obvious trolls on these forums, i find your request a bit hypocritical.
You need to take whatever fetish you have with that 5 year old game of yours and move it to another thread because it has nothing to do with the Far Cry issue.

And since there's one active topic on the Far Cry issue and none on the Sacrifice issue using your logic we can conclude that:

(1) Nobody on Anandtech is playing Sacrifice.
(2) Sacrifice is less important and less popular than Far Cry.

(2) Sacrifice is less important and less popular than Far Cry.

hey how about you get a life jerk!

(1) It obviously took a long time for you to scan posts and think up criticisms
(2) Your a jerk, because off topic posts are always to be found in this forum but we dont feel the need to do what you did.
(3) I win.

Until pcx tells us how to fix the issue I'm going to assume hes full of it, sorry but if you know how to fix a problem there is no reason to be a jackass

Yep I agree and if by chance he isn't bullshitting, he's still lame for acting smug about it.

you know, you're right. to small minded people who cannot see anything from more than 1 perspecitve, it's a lost cause.

but wait, not everyone here is like you.. so i will keep posting, thank you.

you're entirely correct in both those conclusions, but it just goes to show there's no point in a discussion with you as you're apparently incapable of comprehending anything beyond its most simplistic form.

Could we perhaps stop throwing insults around at each other in here? The next time you need help and post a question thread around here, are you going to call the first respondent a "loser" if a reply comes within three minutes? This thread is about Nvidia shadow IQ in FarCry, in case you'd forgotten...

well i wasnt exactly goin for a response because i never asked a question...Of course im not gonna address a person that answers my question as a loser, you know i wouldnt either and i have no idea why you would even say that. I bet ur gonna ask your children if they will jump off a bridge if their friends are doing it. And you are just as bad as him pointing out off topic comments. Which need i repost happen all the time? you cant prevent people from expressing opinions off topic so just shutup about it.
