I want a cell phone and cell phone plan for myself and my wife. Here's the situation:
a) Neither of us have phones or service right now. We'll need to purchase both.
b) She's going to Maryland to do research at the NIH for 9 months. Would be nice if I had a plan where I could call her for free, or she could call me.
c) We live in Seattle, so whatever plan we get will need to cover both Seattle and Washington DC.
d) I don't yak on the phone that much; she talks a bit more. But we're thinking about this as a "phone replacement" type deal; we're about to move into our first house, and we're considering ditching the hard line entirely. So the plan needs to have a decent number of minutes.

Any ideas what I should look at? How much should this cost?

Since you already know this should be posted in the I WANNA thread.

Please BOOKMARK ME.

Here are 21 pages of cell phone plans for Washington.

I think the VoiceStream FamilyTime plan is worth looking at.

$69.99 per month
800 total shared weekday free long distance free roaming minutes between two cell phones
UNLIMITED VoiceStream to VoiceStream cell phone minutes
UNLIMITED free long distance free roaming weekend minutes

The only question is, does VoiceStream offer good service in DC?

Voicestream Family plan for me. I have 5 phones on the plan, 800 minutes, free unlimited between phones, and free long distance. 5 phones costs $100 plus tax. Two phones are $69.99 and $10 for each additional to share the minutes. My sister lives in DC and it works fine. All other carriers that have vamily plans charge much more.

Sounds good. Does this include free phones? If not, what's the best/cheapest way to get a decent phone that works with this plan?

What's your zip code?

Here are VoiceStream Wireless's phones. IMHO the best are the Samsung N105 / Q105 or the Nokia 3390.

Some cell phone shops offer new customer promo's such as Buy 1 - Get 1 Free or Cell Phones for a penny after rebates, etc. The best way to find these are to contact your local VoiceStream Wireless store:
VOICESTREAM WIRELESS - DOWNTOWN SEATTLE
1527 6th Avenue
Seattle, WA. 98101
206-223-1480

VOICESTREAM - NORTHGATE SHOPPING CTR KIOSK NO PMTS
401 NE Northgate Way Kiosk
Seattle, WA. 98125
206-361-2116

or look in your local newspaper, there should be ads for cell phones ... look for VoiceStream and you'll find some deals.

Best of luck!

Rossman, I'm 98105, University District area. In ten days I'm moving to 98125 (Matthews Beach/Sandpoint area) - using all of the tactics I've learned on AT over the past few years, we got a HOT DEAL on our first house. Wooo hooo!

This VoiceStream plan sounds like a good bet if we can get it without getting soaked on the cost of the handsets.
