Wanted: good FPS game with great cooperative team play

I want a relatively recent FPS that has a good LAN cooperative team mode, where you and a friend can just play against computer bots.

We've played Ghost Recon a LOT, but we're looking for less realism (one shot = death) and more "Quake-type" (many shots = death). All our Ghost Recon sessions basically just turn into sniper battles.

Something like Unreal in "Assault" mode - where you had a specific goal (e.g. blow up something on the bridge of a ship), and you and your friends would cooperate to kill the bad guys and accomplish the mission.

It'd be great if we could play a game like F.E.A.R.'s single-player game, but with two people at once.

Tech specs: Must run very well on an Athlon64 3200 w/ATI X850XT. My friend's PC is slightly slower.

Any suggestions? His birthday is coming up soon.

EDIT:
I'm looking for a fun FPS that you can play with only 2 or 3 people over a LAN. While there are some excellent suggestions in this thread, I am troubled that there don't seem to be any recent games that feature coop LAN modes. Or maybe it's just that you guys don't think that my hardware can handle them?

Here's the list so far:

System Shock 2
Halo (possibly)
serious sam 1 & 2
Doom 3 (although I'm unclear on whether I have to download a mod for it)
Quake 2 (bot mod)
latest Swat Games
Invasion mode for UT2K4
Killing Floor mod for UT2K4
RB6 Vegas (Rainbow Six? - and I have no idea what a "SM2" card is)
Half-Life mods
hexen
heretic

It's for a birthday present, so I would really prefer something more recent if possible.

System Shock 2 has a co-op mod for the single-player -- but it's not your typical FPS. Not sure if Halo on the PC lets you do the single-player co-op like on the consoles.

You want serious sam (the original). Game is getting on a bit now but is a total laugh to play co-op at a LAN. Features huge numbers of baddies with a fair amount of variety (including some massive monsters), lots of increasingly large and very silly weapons (cannon ftw), and a fairly simple gameplay. A great no-brainer fps lan game

Easy to install as well. While I always say buy the game if someone turns up who doesn't have it then you can just copy the version with a cracked exe straight to their drive and it runs.

Serious Sam
Serious Sam the Second Encounter
Serious Sam 2
Doom 3 has an excellent coop mod that lets you play the entire single player game coop.
Original Quake 2
The latest Swat Games
There is a total annihilation mod that lets you play the game switching from command view to 1st person. Kind of Fun.
There are lots more I just can't think of them right now....

System shock 2 is fun but you have to get into it, you can't just jump in and play.

I used to have a friend I played games with, but then he moved and now all he plays is DOTA and WOW night after night.... :|. I could write a whole rant about DOTA

Does Painkiller have co-op play? I starting playing PK and soon realized that it's a much better "sequel" to Serious Sam than SS2 was. And the sound track kicks major ass

What about Invasion mode for UT2K4, related to that...Killing Floor mod for UT2K4.

I believe its like wave after wave of increasingly powerful enemies. I haven't played it, perse, but the Killing Floor mod I love and its the same kind of thing only with zombies and contemporary weapons.

Doom3 its a mod, part of the Last Man Standing thing...I tried it out a few weeks back. It seemed to run kind of laggy for me, but it might have just been the server.

Thanks for starting this thread, OP. I've been wondering the same thing lately. I ended up playing Diablo2 over LAN with a couple of friends this past weekend; lots of fun to play and interact at the same table I'll have to give these games a try too. Half-Life 2 also has a co-op mod, but I haven't tried it yet.

UT2004 would be a pretty good choice. It's dirt cheap, runs on all kinds of computers but still looks quite good, lots of game modes, decent bot AI. Onslaught mode is a favorite of many but for it to be any good you'd need bots to fill up the rest of your team. I'm not sure if there is a UT2004 demo (pretty sure there is) but if it offers enough of a glimpse to see if you guys would play it.

I was about to recommend RB6 Vegas as it has a 'Terrorist Hunt' mode for co-op LAN play, but that game runs like crap on all but the fastest rigs. Plus if the X850XT is a SM2 card, no dice at all (yes the game REQUIRES a SM2 card unless they found a workaround since).

Otherwise check out HL2, Quake, UT2k4, etc mods.

Probably I wouldn't try it over anything but lan, same goes with the Farcry COOP mod.

damn, I remember Hexen specifically for its coop, what a blast - especially with its different classes you could maximize your effectiveness with partners by picking different classes and supporting each other with your class' strengths thus minimizing weaknesses you'd have if you played alone or with two (or more) players of the same class. Very fun.

All these old games that had coop but now the newer ones are completely ignoring it (for the most part). F*** the developers, dammit!

so...what's wrong with Unreal Tournament 2004? great game. put the vehicle invasion mod as well as super berserk and vampire. so much fun! i can play that for hours! 200-300 kills before my first death even on the more difficult settings! just run them over with a goliath! so much fun.

SERIOUS SAM 1!!!! and then after you beat it, follow it up with SERIOUS SAM 2!!!

that's like a good 10+ hours of nonstop co-oping right there. I remember me and 4 other dudes played this allll night long until late next morning. that was so stupid and fun.

I loved RTCW, but as far as I know, you cannot create computer-controlled opponents in multiplayer mode, nor can you play the single-player mode with more than one person at the same time.

Here, this is what you need to do the doom3 coop, it has their own levels that they released and also mods the game so you can play the whole single player game coop.

Definately get UT2K4, its like $12 off gogamer so its not a risky investment. Doom3 needs a mod, there might be a couple different ones that do it but the Last Man Standing includes co-op.

RB6 Vegas takes a pretty beefy PC.

System Shock II will probably take some fiddling to get working, and it has a heavy dose of RPG influences...but its a pretty rewarding co-op experience since you can specialize different skills to help each other through the game. I play this one with my wife, and she'll pick hacking skills and I'll pick repair skills for instance. She hacks the terminals and I fix all the weapons when they break.

Unfortunately, most game developers don't include co-op modes anymore...and you'll hear myself and others continually b|tch about it.
