Currently running a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and a GeForce FX 5900 (SE I thinkmay be wrong) Just wondering if im gonna run into problems running the 2005fpw w/DVI. Will it work well for just general surfing and puttering? Gaming? Not much of a FPS guy really, more of an RTS/RPG kinda guy so nothing super intensive. Would I be better off with a 1905FP instead? Kinda want the widescreen joy, but if im gonna have to throw more $$$ at a video card, then its not an option.

Thanks much,

The weird waldo

I wouldnt worry about playing at non native resolutions, people freak out about it, but I find scaling on the 2005fpw to be great, and play loads of games at 1280x768 (or whatever that 16:10 resolution is).

And btw, I would go for the 2005fpw, it is GORGEOUS. Plus, even in RTS\RPG you will might notice the 25ms response time just moving your mouse and scrolling the screen on the 1905.

Yes I whole heartedly support purchasing the 2005. GREAT monitor. Probably the my happiest purcahse for my computer. *Grin* I love playing WoW at 1680 x 1050 soooo pretty.

Great monitor, and as stelleg said, you can just run the next step down in 16:10, which I do if I plug it into my laptop. Scaling works great if you keep the same aspect ratio.

I submit my situation for your comparison.

I'm currently running a Dell 2405 using a Pentium 3 800 MHz and a Radeon 7000. This might be the greatest disparity between monitor and computer/graphics card in the country.

I don't play the latest games. All the ones I play are older and don't require a lot of resources. I've never seen the attraction of the FPS games. Most of my usage is surfing, Microsoft Office stuff. My hardware runs the monitor (1920x1200) just fine. I may see some hesitation when I close a window and the screen needs to be redrawn but I expect that with my 5 year old hardware.

I have a 2005FPW and like it a lot. Your 5900 will support that monitor just fine although not running newer games.

Well I got some good news today! Gonna actually get one of these bad boys for christmas! Yay me!

Next question, since I now have some $$$ for a new video card (maybe) I was wondering if theres a video out there in the $150 that would be a noticable step up. Or would I be better off waiting a while since im still fairly happy with my current card. Sure I cant currently play the newest games at the highest res. but I usually buy out of the 2 year old $20 bin.

EDIT:

To give you an idea of what im lookin for in a $150 vid card is bein able to play Call of Duty 2 at an "average" frame-rate with "average" visuals (Im not that huge a graphic whore). Possible on $150 vid card or am I dreamin?

Wait and see how well your current video card works with your new monitor before you upgrade. You won't find a $150 card that will play COD2 at 1680x1050.
