Hi folks... I'll get to the point.

I have a Gateway NV77H laptop which has the following:

Intel i5-2450m 35watt processor (Socket G2)
HM65 chipset
SJV70_HR motherboard
Gskill 8gb ram
Crucial M100 256gb SSD primary
Seagate 750gb 5400rpm secondary

I'm basically wanting to upgrade from a dual core with HT to a quad core with HT. From what I can tell, I can prolly go with an i7-3632qm? Would love to go with an i7-3820qm, but it's a 45w, which may cause issues.

Why do I want to do this? To tinker... if it works, great. If not, I'll just put the old i5 back in and forget about it. Unfortunately I can't find much info on this series of laptop, the motherboard, or other people trying this idea.

Anyone have any insight?

Have you looked at CPU-World.com yet? I found some very good information on chip and board compatability when I was upgrading my Dell laptop CPUs.

Edit: HM65 chipset does support Ivy Bridge..

Unless Gateway has a CPU whitelist in place, in theory any Sandy Bridge (NOT Ivy Bridge as you suggested, unless it's supported through a BIOS update or shipped during the SB/IB transitional period) will work.

As you already noted the TDP is higher for the quads. I suspect your current heatsink is rated to dissipate 35W; it won't stop you from putting a quad in, but if/when things start getting toasty expect some throttling to happen.

Do you need the extra cores? If not, I'd rather put in an i7 2620/2640.

It should be possible but I wouldn't try upgrading to ivy bridge there because there's a much greater chance of your laptop rejecting it. Although there isn't much benefit in upgrading to a higher end sandy bridge dual core...

I would not stray from the 35 watt tdp. In a confined space, that 10 watt difference is HUGE.

If you want 4C+35W, go for the i7-3612qm. However, they're pretty pricey on ebay ($175+ from a quick search I just did)

My bad on looking at Ivy Bridge... I'll keep looking for Sandy Bridge offerings. That i7-3612qm looks promising, I'll have to keep an eye out for one on Ebay.

Just to give a little more information, I deal alot with HDR photos and use Photomatix and Photoshop Elements primarily to create my images. Figured a quad would help speed things up. I already use my 256gb SSD for a scratch drive, then once I'm done editing I move everything to a networked external. Otherwise I only d/l movies, but the processor upgrade wouldn't affect that.

Thanks for all of your insight!
