Not knowing the history of the game is like going to a concert for a band you don't know the songs of. You'll probably still have fun, but it's so much more enjoyable to know how things have progressed from one medium to another.

Are 10 year olds old enough to play MMORPGS? I ask because my 11 year old sister has been wanting to play guild wars and I keep telling her she isn't old enough.

10 is too young for a full-blown MMORPG IMO. Guild Wars may be ok for a 10-year old as it's fairly lightweight and can be solo'ed using AI companions.

WoW is probably best avoided until the kid is at least 12 or 13.

Anyone - kid or adult - needs a thick skin to play WoW. A huge segment of players are in that 12-14 age range where the tykes are just discovering the joys of internet anonymity (LOELZ I FUCT UR MOM!1!!1) and the freedom from consequences that goes with it. Granted, if they go too far they can be reported and banned, as one young boy found out after annoying me, then making the mistake of referring to homosexuals and African-Americans in not-so-nice terms, inspiring me to report his ass  While WoW has an optional profanity filter, I'd estimate the 12-14 year olds spell 1 word correctly out of every 300-500, essentially negating the filter.

Oh and to the OP - yeah War III is a lot of fun, definitely worth the buy.

Warcraft III is ok, but it continued Blizzard's decline. Pretty much nothing has been changed since Starcraft as far as gameplay is concerned and graphically it's pitiful. Online it's a bit better, but people only play the same three custom maps over and over. Starcraft slays it in that department as well.

warcraft 2 was the best

and to follow-up I do not play WoW anymore because of the player base and time investment.. If you are not playing 5-7 hours an evening preparing potions, buffs, money for raiding then going and spending 4 of those 5-7 in a dungeon, you are not progressing.

If you are not progressing what is the point of playing the game if you never "get" anywhere...for fun? never having a better character is fun? running the same 5 mans for 6 months is fun? might as well spend that 75$ on new games

And it's not really elitist to say tons of people play WOW and have no clue what warcraft was or is or came from, they just play it because it is the next "MMO"

Played heavily for 2 years and finally realized what a time-sink and waste it was. Been Free for a month so far, now I laugh at those who are hooked

Starcrafts a much better game, but blizzard to my knowledge have not produced a shoddy game so far. Warcraft III is worth installing and playing, same with the frozen throne, the storys good and the gameplay although not starcraft its fun anyways.

Content-wise they are fine for kids. In WoW especially, the violence is pretty cartoony and no more offensive than Tom-and-Jerry, for example.

HOWEVER....I would seriously suggest your parents limit her playing time and encourage her to set smaller goals in the game. 10-year olds should be getting exercise (while all their joints still work ), NOT worrying about whether they have Tier 2 or 3 armor.

But since it takes an hour just to get where you're going in these games, it's best that they allow her a block of time per week, say 10 hours/week, distributed as she pleases.

I'll agree on the violence part it's mostly tame, but there are some idiots on there, and with any MMORPG comes some sort of Teamspeak. I wouldn't exactly want my 10 year old to interact with some foul mouthed immature 20 year old who does nothing but cuss. Voice chatting with these people would probably be a very scary experience for most 10 year olds

Maybe next time you won't send your little 10 year old into Best Buy alone? How can you be so sure that it was the "idiot" at Best Buy who gave the wrong product and not your son that asked for the wrong thing?

On the other hand, most people in the 20+ range won't want to play with people under 18.
I'm in a guild of people who are mostly in the low 20's to mid 30's, and I'd say the environment probably wouldn't be too healthy for most <15 kids, but then again, we pretty much won't recruit anyone under 20 unless they're well known for being mature and able to fit in with the rest of us.
I don't think that'd be a problem really.

And yes, I think WarCraft III was an excellent game, good story, graphics aren't great, but they do what they're supposed to, and good gameplay.
Multiplayer is excellent as well.

if you got WC3 and TFT its awesome
the custom map community of that game is insane, but of course if you're playing wow it probably wont get much use
if you ever get time it will definitely keep you occupied for a long time

WC3 + TFT is an awesome game. Endless potential for enjoyment if you get into the custom online maps like DotA.

so you are another one of those who never played warcraft RTS but chose to flood the WoW world...great.

your son probably only asked for "Warcraft"

oh and can i buy your frozen throne CD key. it'd be fun online.

It doesn't seem like Blizzard really cares about the warcraft story anymore though. They're basically destroying their own lore to make more money off of WoW, I mean come on gnomes? They are possibly the most stupid gaming creation ever, and they were never in any real warcraft game. I have to wonder why people would even wanna play WoW without playing warcraft though. Isn't a big part of MMORPG's questiong throught he story, and wouldn't that be muchmroe fun if you were actually familiar with the universe. I mean little cool things like finding where grom hellscream fought mannaroth is sweet playing a game like WoW, but I don't think most of the people that play or even Blizzard care anymore. I mean people that play like 5 hours a day don't even know who doomhammer is. Anyway just a small little rant, I don't understand how people could be obsessed with a game they don't even know the history of.

How are 10 year old kids even supposed to know there is a history to this game? I should have made him play all the older Elder Scrolls games before Oblivion huh? Feel bad for all those console gamers that only get to play Oblivion.

He plays it with his friends and enjoys it. Big deal.

Actually, I played Oblivion but I've never played any other Elder Scrolls game, and I never plan to. I was just trying to say WoW is a little more enjoyable if you know the backstory. I never said to force him to play the past games either. He bought WC3 instead of WoW so he might as well give it a shot.

Excellent, excellent SP game. WC3 and TFT contain some of Blizzard's best FMVs, a great plot, and fun gameplay. The MP goes from your standard RTS fare to stuff like DOTA and Tower Defense. As much as it sucks that you got the wrong product, it's one you should really have anyways .
