serious note. the US may be the biggest movie market but its not the largest WoW market, its behind both the EU and China. which I assume is why the release is scheduled the way it is
I strongly disagree. Because that mindless, two-dimensional, plain evil orcs are done to death in LOTR. Go watch LOTR for that then.
If you follow Warcraft lore from the game (esp War3), Blizzard did a great job adding color & depth to their Orc race. It is the human race that are always bickering, arrogant, and act like assholes. This hits home because that's who we are IRL (i.e. our history).
Blizzard Orcs are awesome. It has considerable depth- the leader Thrall was raised by humans as a child and plays a vital link to the human alliance. Same goes for humans- Jaina Proudmoore assisted in uniting humans together with Orc to defeat the common enemy - The Burning Legion (kind of like uniting against Whitewalkers in GoT).
When Jaina's dad found out about the relationship with Orcs, he was ignorant to Orc's true ways and Jaina just watched him die.
The politics between races, and their respective internal struggles are very nicely done. It's akin to Game of Thrones.
And this is much better than your typical, 'ALL ORCS BAD, WE HUMANS ARE ALL GOOD'. That's like grade school fantasy stuff.
You want evil being evil? That's what Lich King / Undead / Burning Legion are for. And they have great internal struggles & different factions too.
I have not seen the movie. I think it only deals War1 & 2 storyline right? (Someone confirm). If so, the real puppeteer behind 'corrupted orcs' have not surfaced yet (which are Undead / The Burning Legion).

I read the plot in wiki. It looks like the movie ends with baby Thrall being found by humans. That's pretty awesome. This movie is pretty much a direct fan service to those gamers who grew up playing War1, 2, 3, and WoW.

Fixed that for ya! Thrall would have hated humans if it wasn't for that one woman that helped him escape Durnholde. She was essentially the one to show him that there's good in humans unlike the slavers that subdued him. In a sense, Varian's story is a reverse parallel to Thrall's story as both were kept in captivity, but one grew to resent his captors (Varian's hatred of Orcs) and one grew to care for them (Thrall's compassion for humans). Given that one came far later than the other, that sounds like lazy writing, which is pretty much what we've been getting out of Blizzard for a while.
Hard to say you played through the last couple Warcraft games to have that view of Blizzard Orcs.
As for the movie, even a mediocre US opening will have them recovering cost of movie and a good chunk of the marketing budget. So if US "outperforms" or China mirrors rest of the international market in following week performance, sequel likely to be when rather than if.

I know the story of Thrall. But I also know the first two Warcraft games had them being demon-invaders and all the rehabilitation came after those first two games. This movie covers events from the first two games.
You could have this noble redemption occur in the second movie or something, but to establish it it should be simple: Orc invaders invade realm, realm fights back.
Alright, so I went to see the movie today, and honestly... I agree with the critics. The beginning of the movie is cut and paced so weirdly that you don't even know where you are at times. There were some choices made that just didn't make too much sense. The biggest is probably Lothar's son as I think the role of the brash youth would have been better filled by Varian Wrynn. The queen was pretty much a waste of screen time as her character really served no purpose at all. I mean... that's not surprising given that she's really never even mentioned in the lore. They seemed to even screw up Garona's parentage (
At one point during the movie, she mentions that the necklace has her mother's tusk on it. Garona's mother was a Draenei -- who do appear during the movie as slaves -- and Draenei don't have tusks.
)
I wish that they would've handled Medivh a bit better.
At one point, this weird lady inside a cube (more on that in a second) states that "The Guardian" is just a name. Uh... no, lady... The Guardian of Tirisfal is a shit ton more than "just a name". As for the woman, my only guess is that she's actually Aegwynn (Medivh's mother and the previous Guardian of Tirisfal), but that doesn't make a ton of sense given that Mr. Glowy Eyes stated that the cube had been there for a really long time. It also didn't appear to be a dragon in human form, which would have also worked. Overall, I think Medivh's betrayal just came across as weird... especially when he seemingly took the shape of Sargeras. I mean... the whole point of Sargeras bringing the Orcs to Azeroth was so he could get to the Tomb of Sargeras and retrieve his body. Sargeras was just a soul at that point as Aegwynn killed him years ago.
One thing that was kind of awkward is that while Stormwind looked grand, it didn't look lively at all. There was only a single scene where it looked like more than a dozen extras lived in the city.
As someone who has been playing Warcraft since the DOS orcs and humans days, I enjoyed it a lot. Now it wasn't perfect but it was a lot of fun to watch. My favorite character was prolly Guldan, I think they portrayed him spot on as I would imagine. Now I wanna level a warlock!
After seeing what Blizzard did with the stories in StarCraft II and Diablo III, I don't hold that much hope that Blizzard is even capable of writing a decent story anymore. StarCraft is a great example as it had a good story of characters that were largely grey to simple, trope-tastic bullshit.
I really wanted to like this movie, but it did not do a good job on a technical level (as mentioned, the beginning was just really badly cut) and did a poor job on a story level. When it comes to doing injustice to a nerdy property, I'd say this is up there with the Green Lantern movie.
Gul'dan being interesting? Based upon the movie, can anyone tell me his motivations? Nope! It's about as bad as your average comic book movie villain where they're really nothing more than an evil obstacle that tends to have flaky motivations. In this case, the main issue is that there was very little talk of the demons, which would have explained quite a bit.
I'm actually a bit curious if I was already set in a foul mood after seeing the Jason Bourne trailer that accompanied the movie. That trailer reminded me a lot of what Die Hard 5 looked like (all bad action, no substance), and I really don't want that.

You're giving the critics too much credit. One of the last reviews I read discussed that they didn't like how wasted effort was spent on things like decorating the orc tusk with jewlery, i.e. another simpleton reviewer like desura just looking for more LOTR style evil horde vice how they actually exist in this universe.
I saw it last night too, I haven't read any reviews on it either. As someone who knows the lore well enough (played since wow beta + warcraft and whatnot), I liked it. If I knew nothing, or little about it, i'd be confused as to what was happening, and WHY. Who certain people were, why they mattered, etc. I think it would have been better with a little explanation, because as a standalone movie, not that great plot wise.
I thought I was watching a film made by students at first, it seemed to forced, acting wise. I got into it though, I think they would have been better off with an extra hour or so.
