how do you know where?

and with all these wide open networks, you almost don't need to subscribe to an isp...

That's a thing of the past. Besides, you should be using WPA if your equipment supports it.

Cheers!

I'll check into WPA then, but I've only seen one person try to get on the network and their MAC address is banned now

Dear AT,

FYI, WEP isn't all that secure anyway. And with a assload of power, neither is WPA.

As far as legalities for "wardriving" or even using someone else's AP, the big argument FOR it is that airspace belongs to whatever land you're on. Public street = public air space. Further, making an analogy, if your AP was a house and you left it unlocked and the door open and someone trespasses...who's fault is it? Ignorance is not an excuse.

Love,
Placer

Anywone have an alternate to NetStumbler? NS seems to work every once in a while and the craps out and won't detect anything after a few minutes of use.

1st of all, just because they dont have "WEP" enabled doesnt mean that they are not protected.. 802.1x people.

2nd of all, yes it is very scary how many open networks there are. My local police station has an open wap.

Let me guess, the chick from that apartment IM'd you to come down and kill a spider in her room.

What I find even scarier is not so much the lack of encryption, but people who don't even change the default password to log into their routers!

I've got three wireless networks in my neighborhood, every one of them has the default password of "password", "admin" or "1234" as the admin login for the router.

Is it possible to get into criminal problems once you get caught tapping into someone else's wireless internet?
