I got Warhammer 40k: DoW this weekend. Pretty cool game.

why won't some of my units move in closer to attack if they are too far away and I tell them to attack something or like they just stand there doing nothing?

what sort of loadout do you give your squads? i tend to find myself giving them Heavy Bolters and Missile Launchers for the most part. Plasma guns seem kind of worthless. Sometimes i throw in a few flame throwers.

I think you can set the units aggressiveness and that will affect their reaction to fighting.

I will drop 2 miniguns and the rest rocket launchers.
I find the rocket launchers are way more effective than anything else because of how infantry are affected by blasts. The knocking them to the ground interupts their ability to shoot.

I have had a blast with using the artiliry to knock the CPU around as well.

If you have a squad with say some heavy bolters/missles and some members without, the upgraded weapons have longer ranges than standard. So your troops will move to where the long-range weapons can hit, leaving the other guys in the squad nothing to shoot at unless something comes closer. This is nice as you can take out say a listening post without receiving return fire. The other way would be for the whole squad to run in til everyone could shoot at it, and thus be chewed up by incoming fire, and your upgraded weapons would be useless until their beareres stopped moving and took aim. If you really want to do this though, move them in until the enemy is within everyone's range.

You're talking about fighting style. You can set Assault, Ranged or Versatile. Pretty self explanatory.
What fish said is accurate too. A squad set to ranged will leave shorter ranged troops out of range when the longer ranged weaponry is brought to bear.

Plasma Guns MURDER heavy infantry. VS stuff like warp spiders, all space marines, heavy orc units like nobs, etc etc, plasma just owns.

Rockets are good for disrupting troop formations and vehicles/buildings, bolters are great for light/med. infantry.

Flame throwers are awesome for breaking squads in short order.

I've played a few games online and have consistently gotten my ass whooped. I've since given up.

basically where i'm at, too.

i have the expansion pack (Winter Assault) and i have a 5-27 record. those 5 wins being against CPU players, and the losses vs. real people.

sometimes DOW is one giant RPS game.

i go infantry, other people get vehicles = i get stomped.

i rush for vehicles, but have no infantry, other people rush w/ infantry = i get stomped

i've never been good at rts games against other players.
i like to sit and build my forces and you just can't do that against another player.
