It's not a bad deal. If the memory were on-board it would be better. But I think Creative is discontinuing the Nomad II line, so accessories, like a docking station are hard to find.

But if you're looking for an mp3 player w/ a FM turner that can also record, I think the Nomad is a solid player.

The docking station comes w/ a rechargable battery that allow you recharge your player w/o messing w/ additional cables. In addition, the docking station connects you to your computer, again w/o additional cables. Both functions can be completed w/o the docking station, but it makes transfering music and recharging your player less of a hassle.

FYI, I've seen docking stations sell at eBay for $80. They used to sell for $40 retail, but when Creative stopped making them, the prices have sky rocketed.

It'll do 128. Not sure about 256. I have this player and it's great! Highly recommended.

I bought one of these from outpost in December for ~75 w/ a 64 meg card.

It's a great player. I bought one and my dad bought one. His did not work - hissing noise during MP3 playback.

O yeah... they do take 128 meg card with the flash update (really easy to do). No, they do not go over 128 megs yet... doubt if they ever will since smart media seems to be fading away...

It will do 128MB but it's a beta firmware, good player overall for the money. FYI, I got my docking station from Creative back when for $10. Newegg's selling 128MB Smart Media for $42 so about $100 total. I've had mine for several monthes, be prepared to change the music often as it gets old quick (the FM tuner is a savior.)

Can someone please send me the software for this? It is not on their webpage. Therefore I have had the same 15 songs in my player for the past year. If someone could burn me a copy of the software I will pay you shipping and a few bucks for your time. please email me if you can do this for me.

Thanks

Try this link for the firmware upgrade. It should be a file called "cn2fware_3_00_233.EXE'

I agree, I doubt creative will update the 0mb firmware for the 256mb. It took them forever to release this version. Anyway, it looks like the entire Nomad II line is being discontinued. If you go the nomadworld site, they already have a promo for the Nomad 3.

Btw, if you want to increase the number of songs your Nomad can hold convert your files to WMA's. There's slight decrease in sould quality, but you almost double your storage capacity. I can hear the difference, but I think it's worth it. The conversion program can be found in the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack.

<< It will do 128MB but it's a beta firmware >>

It's actually considered to be fully-released now.
I picked up one of these the last time they posted this. Also got a docking station for $10. Can't believe they're going for so much, now!

Anyway I think tat for $60 (+ whatever you spend on the 128MB SmartMedia) is a pretty decent deal, esp. if you're looking for a small solid-state device. You lose the functionality of the ones equipped with CD-ROMS and HDDs, but you gain the fact that it's tiny. I carry mine almost everywhere.

Interesting...I'm going to have to try this and see what I think.

The reason I want to have 256MB memory is I like to workout with music. Normally, I run for an hour and then 20 minutes of weight lifting. and i don't like to spend time to convert my mp3 to some other format. (I am lazy!)

Acedaddy323,

The software CD that I received with my Nomad II would not work and I had no difficulty in getting Creative to send me replacements by Fed/Ex (at their expense). I suggest you might want to try the same. I called the toll-free sales line and all they wanted to know was my serial number (on the inside of the battery compartment).

Another idea is that you might want to check out the alternative software that works with the Nomad that you can find on www.nomadness.net - which by the way is a good site about this MP3 player.

Failing this, I suggest you post an address to which some kind sole can send you a disk, and avoid any chance that Creative is trying to enforce its copyright on its (terrible) PlayCenter 2 software. I know this sounds paranoid, but it does not make any sense to me that you are still seeking this software from the last time you posted your request in December when a Nomad thread was last on this site given all of the alternatives available.

Got mine, no 32 mb card. Guess I'll have to give Outpost a call since the box says 32 mb, the invoice sheet says 32 mb, and the website says 32mb. Tigerdirect gave out 32 mb cards when this happened before, I doubt outpost will be that nice. Scary when td has better service than outpost...

I'll tell ya, the best MP3 player is still the discontinued RIO 500. These have 64MB onboard and support 128MB flash cards. That approximately 60 tunes at 128bit/mp3. Over the XMAS holiday at least 5 people approached me on the buying one of these for someone - I sent them to ebay where you can still pick them up new/sealed for under $100 (+the card $42).

You can't get a better player or deal for a solid player with extremely high volume, separate bass/treble and 192MB of space. I am going on 2 years with this thing and it takes a beating at the gym each morning.

$142 for a RIO 500 is a hot deal to me.

I got my Nomad II and was surprised to see that there was no headphones or in-line remote included. I just looked back at the product description on the web page and indeed it doesn't seem to mention that it comes with headphones, I was just expecting it to. Mainly for that inline remote, I've already got lots of headphones.

Don't like to spend what time???? It takes like 30 seconds! You run the converter program, tell it to make duplicate files, poof, it's done.

the headphones and remote that come with the nomad2 are pretty bad and flimsy, maybe its a blessing in disguise

Got mine yesterday...appears to be a factory "blem". There's a very small flaw in the paint on the front of the unit, but is otherwise perfect. For almost half off what you can find these things for otherwise, I'm not complaining.

the Nomad II i got off of FS/FT has been awesome. since i have good desktop speakers (Z560s) i still use VBR MP3s (like 5MB ~160-192kbps each), but for the nomad i use WMA 64kbps and they sound really good for portables!

You can use the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack posted earlier in the thread. I would rip straight from WAV to WMA. When you go from MP3 to WMA you're stacking two different types of compression.

Dunbar has a good point. the only reason i go wav->mp3->wma is because once i made the mp3s over the summer, i deleted the wavs. i have only made wma copies in the past month as duplicates to my mp3s.
