400gig Seagate sataII 16meg cache 5 year warranty, $109 at Fry's B&M through 2/20.
Seemed like a fair deal to me.

B&M, a big pile of them in the store.

Edit: And "No linkage" is your first post ever?
You're going to fit right in...

This is a Fry's B&M deal. Not Fry's online. I just searched for Seagate and there's not another current thread on Fry's B&M for a 400 GB Seagate drive.

But it is on the Fry's site, the exact same product...so it is valid to ask for a link, and it isn't a B&M only thing.

I was wondering. Is there a difference between 7200.9 and 7200.10 besides one being newer than the other?

7200.10 uses perpendicular recording which gives better speeds.
.9 is suppose to run cooler and quieter.

i'm not sure about reliability differences.

The reliability should be about the same. As for actual performance, you probably won't even notice a difference. Only in benchmarks do things like this show up. I would be happy getting either.

Yes, the 7200.10 uses perpendicular recording. 7200.9 doesn't.

is the performance between the .10 and .9 going to be noticeable in game loading or other apps? has anyone noticed a difference in noise and heat?

From what I've seen around, 7200.9 was one of the most reliable revisions Seagate has ever released in quite a while. As someone already mentioned, it is also very cool and quiet. I own one myself.

I also own a 400GB 7200.10 (AS) model, made in China, it's pretty darn loud(clatter box), and it runs pretty hot(but nothing to concern about). I heard the units made in Singapore are quieter because they use a different motor.

just some thoughts to add.

Your reference does indeed claim that 7200.10 drives feature perpendicular recording technology. It does not, however, say that 7200.9 drives do not. Newer 7200.9 drives with 160GB platters also use perpendicular recording. Click on the specifications tab on this link.

Sorry, I couldn't find a link at the newly revised seagate website. This illustrates my problem with buying a seagate drive at this time. You don't know what you're going to get. How many platters? What kind? Loud motor or quiet motor? Who knows?

I am not sure where you heard newer 7200.9 have perpendicular recording but you are linking to a Newegg spec which have been wrong in the past. The Seagate link is talking about the Baracuda family of 7200.9 and 7200.10 drives. The Seagate link doesn't say 7900.9 do not have perpendicular recording because it says that 7200.10 ONLY drives have perpendicular recording. That means to me that 7200.9 drives do not have this.

I was 10 for 10 in getting .10s in a .9 retail package. Good stuff. The 2 per house kinda stinks though.

One would think that if one wanted the straight dope, one should be able to get it from the manufacturer. But that's not the way the world works. Yes, in my opinion and based on my experience, Newegg is a more reliable source of information about Seagate drives than Seagate. Seagate's revelation that slimline 7200.9 use the same perpendicular recording platters as 7200.10 drives has been removed from their website, but I found this reference using the interenet archive wayback machine.

I don't know if Seagate was lying when they posted that web page, whether they lied in your reference when they claim that perp record tech is available only on 7200.10 drives or, as I guess you are suggesting, they reversed technology directions and decided to develop a new higher data density longitudinal recording technology platter for their slimline single platter 7200.9 drives and not tell anyone about it. These slimlines are available as large as 160 GB and I've never heard of Seagate ever releasing a 160GB platter without using perpendicular tech.

But, who knows? That's my point.
