2MB Buffer... if it's not BP, then you'll be making a lot of coasters...

BP is important but you also want to make sure you can use it with clone CD and other software.

Cybordolphin: Not sure what you mean by "Nero copy cd" but Nero is just disk copy software like EZ Cd Creator except much better. CD Clone is also CD copy software but it is capable of copying in the raw DAO mode, and other modes, which can copy software with copy protection written into the CD. Nero comes free with quite a few drives and CD clone is around 50.00 US. Here's their web page Clone cd

This drive is made by Ricoh. I have it and it works great. I paid quite a bit more but it's the same drive because the sku# 70003597 is what I had ordered.

OK so which deal is better????

The onw at buy.com 16X10X32(we think is a rebadged Ricoh or Aopen) for $79 or the one at NewEgg for $85 that is a Lite-On 16X10X40?

Im buying one of these 2 drives today.

I have the Phillips 8X4X32 I picked up over the weekend, about to return it to get one of these 2 drives. Out of 20CD's I coastered 8 just because I was downloading a small file in the background. I eriously doubt its BP with that happening.

There are no burn-proof 8X drives. The Philips might only have 2mb of buffer, not sure. It might have 4 mb but I didn't look at mine when I bought it. It's in my niece's computer now. I don't know what the cpu utilization of this drive is. If it's high you won't be able to do other tasks while burning cds. My 8X Plextor has no BP but has 4 mb buffer and low cpu utilization so I can run other programs and still burn successfully.

Maybe this will help make me decision easier (sorry to post so much but I want to buy today)

Of the 3 drives I have it narrowed down to.

Do any of the 3 NOT have support for CloneCD?

It appears all but the Ricoh/Aopen are supported by clone 3 cd. The reason is I couldn't find the model number for Ricoh and the AOpen is supported through the 12X models. Here's link just click on supported writers. That should help you out. clone cd

The Lite-On is 100% supported and has Burn Proof

The HP Model isnt listed , it says Burn Proof in the ad , but another gentleman says its a rebadged Ricoh and has JustLink

The Ricoh/Aopen model # also isnt listed.

So the question is , IS the HP a rebadged Ricoh and DOES it have RAW-DAO 96 support for clone cd and is it Burn Proof or JustLink? If it does support raw-dao 96, Im thinking the CDRW/Scanner deal from HP is the best bet (the info for the deal is in another thread) Now just to confirm the details of the drive *sigh*

the staples HP deal gets a lot simpler when the scanner is not in stock. Its not in stock in most locations, might want to check that.

The ricoh drive will work work with CloneCD but does not mean it will make a working backup of Safedisc 2 protected software..very few drives ca ndo this and most are based on Philips mechanism...such as the Philips 8432 drive..Acer will for sure, Liteon 2410 drive supposedly will and Plex241040 is supposed to as well

I didn't know that HP ever sold BurnProof CDRW's. It's not to say they don't now, but its a possibility the ad was wrong and it's a Just-Link writer, possibly like you said, a Ricoh. I can't find any info on Ricoh as far as model #. Anybody out there have a 16X RICOH with a model number attached?????
The Lite-on is a good way to go for an inexpensive CDRW. The 12X has burn proof. The 16X has something called SmartLink. Not sure how well it works compared to burnproof. As you said its clonecd compatible for sure.

http://www.hpcdwriter.com/products/cd12i/

according to that link from their site, the HP CD12ri supports "HP Buffer Underun Prevention Technology"

So either way Burn Proof or Just Link, apparently both are just as good if you read the review from the link posted earlier.

Im just trying to discover if the HP drive does indeed support RAW-DAO 96 like the 2 models before it (Its safe to assume they do)
