I can't stand with noise of any hard drive other than seagate barracuda IV.
As my experience (also recommended by quietpcusa.com),
seagate barracuda IV , the most quietest 7200rpm hard drive in the world,
is the only 7200rpm one which does not need this badboy.

I bought a couple of these over a year ago from directron.com. Installed a Western Digital 30GB, single platter, 5400rpm (model AB) in each. One drive has been in daily use, the other contains Norton Ghost images of the working drive.

These things work as advertised; I don't think I'd risk putting in a 7200rpm model (although they tend to be cooler than they used to be).

I don't mind the sound of HDD heads positioning, it is high-pitched whines that bug me. Do ATX switching power supplies have their own whine, separate from the fan noise? I'm about to tear apart my Enermax to find out.

Interesting... not only sound insulated, but heat insulated as well! =D

I've got two of them. The metal plates you see sticking out the side come in contact with the drive and will radiate the heat away just fine IF those plates are screwed down to something that can absorb the heat. I originally mounted them with the plastic rails that allowed them to slide in and snap in to the 5.25 inch bays. The drives got REAL hot that way. I then flipped both of the plates around so that the flaps point outward and screwed the flaps down the the case itself (in an open cavity at the bottom of the case). They run cool and real quiet now with 7200 rpm drives in them.
