I second sonicworld. This is a really good printer. I've had it for almost two years now and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Dell Home has this for $144.86 shipped free and no sales tax:

Actually it's listed in Staples weekly flyer as a "Special Buy" and the price is good through 12-13-03. No coupon required. I assume you're referring to the Staples.com price of $179. Why it appears on Staples.com for $179 is beyond me. I will edit my topic header by adding B&M.

I just picked up a flyer at omax for their friends and family sale and they have this printer for 99.99. I think the sale starts Decmeber 13th.

"omax" meaning OfficeMax??? What a deal! I'm gonna pick one up if our local stores have them in stock. I've had mine almost two years and I'm sure the drum or toner will need to be replaced soon. But at this price it's cheaper to just buy another.

The toner it comes with is only a starter toner, but if you did have to replace the drum this is cheapier.

Those considering this printer might look at the following
memory thread. It has useful information on doing a memory upgrade (at least it was for me). Pretty much any old 72-pin SIMM will work, either salvaged from an old pentium or bought for a few bucks from any of the vendors.

We've had one for about a year and a half. It prints nice and has been reliable.

Not as good a deal as the Samsung ML-1710 Laser, 17ppm, 8mb, 250 sheet cassette for $99 after the current $70 MIR. I have this printer and it is FAST! The 600x600 is very good except if your going to print graphics.

Click here. Lots of people agree that the drum goes bad way too quickly, making the Samsung and the Minolta the better choices for most people.

OK - I have had 3 brother mfc's, 9600 and 9700. they churn out thousands of pages a month and the drums get changed once every 2 years. that is affter many toner cartridges (some of them refilled)

they are workhorses, The Cannon and HP mfc's both Died . So, I doubt that thread has any validity.

no, i dont work for Brother

and the price of that printer is about what a drum and toner would cost, so I'll pick one up for the parts

It varies. I've printed almost 9,000 pages now on my Brother HL-1440 and the original drum is still doing great.

Yeah, Brothers are fine for some people. As I said in that other thread, those who have problems are usually not business users who generate thousands of pages a month and change their drums every 2 years. Home users might go through 1 toner a year at the most and expect the drum to last years. Of course you might be lucky, but I doubt this is possible.

My 1440 is streaking and producing dark copies after one year of use. How do I fix this?
