Hey I just came across a yamaha 16-10-40 OEM for $185 at Computer-show.

I was going to start a new thread but they only show 1 in stock. Anyone in the market may want to check it out.

I found Verbatim and Yamaha make 10X CDRW's. I found some at my local BB, Compusa and frys for about $10 for a pack of 5

The Plextor 16x drive I have works great on Memorex 8x 74 min and 80 min discs, and Kodak Silver 8x discs.

(All running at 16x)

According to one website I found during a search for QPS and Plextor was this:
QPS Que! Fire 16x10x40 (Plextor)

In the ()'s they are referring to the manufacturer of the drive mechanism. That is the Firewire version of the drive, I'm 99% positive that the regular IDE version is a Plextor as well.

Edit: I went ahead and bought one, needed a replacement for my 4x burner heheh. Ground shipping so it should be here in like 5-6 days at most. If you guys want to wait I'll post and let everyone know what it is. Rebate lasts until 4/15, purchase has to be made by 3/31 so it'll give everyone plenty of time.

Wednesday Edit: Drive has shipped from FL (I live in GA), should get it on Friday is my guess.

Thursday Edit: Wrote technical support an email about the drive mechanism manufacturer of the drive and he confirmed for me that they are indeed Plextors. Can't wait to get mine tomorrow!

Friday Edit: SEE MY OTHER REPLY!!!

i have done this multiple times. call plextor and ask if plextor makes the drives for qps. say that a sales rep for the qps drive said it was, and that you wanted to confirm it. works like a charm because the csr's are programmed to make sure that the plextor name is as publicised as possible. i'd call but i'm happy with my 12x burn proof. my next upgrade will be the 24x sanyo i just saw like 5 minutes ago.

Max,
I've tried contacting everyone else that I could at QPS with no response.

I would simply like to know if the new IDE 16/10/40 cdrw drive is made using a Plextor mechanism.
Thanks,

What software do these come with? and why isn't there anything on the QPS web site about these drive yet? This QPS place reminds me of smart and friendly for some reason.

I got this drive and it is a plextor v1.02 on the firmware, but, I could not upgrade to v1.08 for the firmware it keep coming up as drive not found. It comes with adapted software. I used Nero and it works very well. If anybody knows how I can upgrade the firmware, I appreciate it.

THE CDRW I RECEIVED FROM EGGHEAD WAS A QPS BUT IT WAS NOT A PLEXTOR!!!

That being said, what I received is a Yamaha CRW2100E-NB. I guess technical support and customer service at QPS likes to lie to its customers about its products? I was told and saw another reply in this thread that they were supposed to be Plextors. I guess both Yamahas and Plextors are shipping and it's a 50/50 chance what you are going to get.

Sorry if I mislead anyone, but I was mislead too. I'm not too mad, I've always liked Yamaha CDR's, just wanted to see how Plextor faired but I guess I'll have to wait till something a lot faster comes along. Upgrading from a 4x to a 16x will be nice even if I don't save the extra 5-10 seconds a Plextor has shown in benchmarks. Anyways, $196 for a 16x10x40x is still a great deal IMO.

I'm going to post the THREE emails I've now received from QPS personnel.

1: Dear Customer. We apologize for the inconvenience. The mechanism used in this drive is a Plextor.

We are currently using a Yamaha engine for our 16x10x40 IDE drives.
The only 16x10x40 drive where we are currently using a Plextor engine is our Firewire model.

I am sorry if you received wrong information, I will check with the tech support dept to make sure they are aware this is not the case.
It is easy to see where the mistake was made.
We normally use Plextor for our IDE drives until they can't keep up with our needs and then we switch to another vendor.
Plextor was too slow in developing their 16x and could not get large enough quantities to us in time for us to meet our commitments. So we went with Yamaha.

I have one coming from Egghead as well and I've already submitted a customer service request informing them of the above misinformation from the "manufacturer".
