It's still on clearance at Office Depot for $59.88, but very hard to find stock.

I noticed amazon.com has it marked down also:

Canoscan 670U at Amazon.com

Use one of the $5 off coupons floating around and use the super saver free shipping.

This scanner does not require a power chord (it is powered through the USB cable) and can fit nicely in your carry case next to your laptop if you want. Scans of color photos are very nice.

Javacool,

I own a Hewlett Packard 5P, Canoscan 670U, Vantas 3000, and a Memorex 6136U.

The Memorex is horrible, the Vantas scans all right but the colors are washed out.

My old trusty HP 5P scans wonderfully and has awesome scanning software, but it requires an internal SCSI card - it only seems to like the ISA SCSI card that came with it, I have tried a PCI SCSI card with a new SCSI cable - but it doesn't seem to like it.

The Canon 670U scans great (very good colors) but a tad dark, not quite as bright as the 5P. With a very tiny bit of software tweaking the scans from the 670U will exacly match the scanned in photos. I am very pleased with the quality of the scans overall. The scanning software of the 670U is a bit minimalist compared to the 5P, but gets the job done.

We have the Artec scanner that you can often get at staples fo $10 after MIR. The specs look just like the Canon and it operates the same, great color but a bit dark.

Anyway to find out if the guts are the same?

If so, save a few $$$ and get the artec.

I'll let you know. I just order that canon scanner last night. I have an Artec right now. It's not too good cuz it's so dark and only 300dpi max.

I personally know about 6 people who own the 670U or previous models of this scanner, everyone seems happy with them.

Miko,
I have yet to see anyone compare the Artec to the Canon. I am very curious to know how they stack up. Let us know.....

The difference in size between the Canons and regular size scanners is enormous, regular scanners take up at least 4 times more space. The quality of scans from the Canon is just as good as full-size scanners and in low dpi is decently fast. However at high dpi it can be a bit slower than full-size scanners. So the only person who I wouldnt recommend it to is someone who scanned dozens of really high dpi images one after the other often.
Also the Canon comes with the best software bundle, especially for the price. Full versions of Omnipage Pro, a full version Photo editor and a full-version photo album software. For this price it cant be beat.

I have had 3 Canon scanners now...

A 620p (parallel), a 630u (USB), and now a 660u. They have all been great scanners.

The slim line ones, are fantastic, takes up very little space, and scan pretty fast.

I was a little bit confused by the "no power chord" in the title. As the description says there is "One cable for power and USB" (since a USB connection can be used for power). So the power cord isn't missing.

Nice deal and you might want to edit your thread title again to say
no power cord needed -- instead of -- no power chord required

USB scanners is not for win98se. Will not work. Artec is good and not dark. Just use soft settings to make it lighter.
