not a bad deal for 2 reasons.

its a pretty nice notebook for one thing.

turion
14" xbrite widescreen
radeon xpress200
and its only like 5.4 pounds.

the other thing is $50 goes to the lance armstrong cancer fund.

but whats even better is that you can buy the same notebook as a compaq in silver just it costs $100 more for any identical config you need to send in a rebate and no $50 goes to cancer. so you actually save money getting the better looking black notebook and contribute to the cancer fund.

if you have an employee purchase program code (like i do) you can probably get another 6-10% off.

i think if this has a radeon x800 mobility it would be the perfect laptop. too bad it doesnt.

Looks to be a great notebook. I think its based on the HP dv1000/Compaq V2000 chassis. Great cause too

Yeah...I think this is the one that I'll be purchasing in the next month or so.

~$1,000 for everything that I want in a notebook. Can't beat that!

Wow, this looks good. Too bad I just bought a 700m a few months ago..

I wish I knew about this before I was in the market.

Go Lance!

I agree, it's a good deal.

Was pricing this earlier today too.

For $999, I can get:

Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional with SP2
AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-30 (1.6GHz/1MB L2 Cache)
14.0 WXGA Widescreen (1280x768)
ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/productivity ports
512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
60 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Microsoft(R) Works/Money

Or for an additional $100, I can upgrade to:

AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-34 (1.8GHz/1MB L2 Cache) and 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive

yeah i'mreally tempted too. with my epp code from my old job (haha it still works) i can get 6% off.

so i'd get a turion ml-30, 512mb , trubright screen, dvd burner, 60 gb, with 12 cell and 802.11g for $962. might just be worth doing.

What kind of battery life can you expect with the 12 cell?

I'm impressed with my Dell 700m and the 8 cell battery life - almost 5 hours!

i imagine it will be close to over 7 hours, like my dv1000 with the 12 cell. eat it

If you're seriously looking at one of the Turions, Best Buy has the Compaq V2000 w/ Turion 2800 (ML28), 512 M RAM, 60GB HDD, buitin WiFi, DVD Read/CDRW, and TruBright screen for $879 + tax OTD -- no rebates to worry about. This comes out about $100 less than ordering the same config online IIRC.

I got one last weekend and love it. The only things I wish I could change are the video RAM is shared and it's not a DVD-RW.

you just have to buy the compaq v2000z.

the problem with the turion at best buy is it is the v2000. has a 15.4" screen but weight is 6.45 pounds not 5.2 like the v2000z / l2000 notebook.

i'd personally give up the inch in screen for 1.2 pounds.

Actually, the one at Best Buy (the one I bought) has the smaller screen and the lighter weight (They list it at 5.4 lbs. -- maybe because of the builtin WiFi or something). It is listed as model V2311US. The funny thing is, it's $979 now, and not $879 like last week...

I'm glad I bought when I did.

To clear up a couple things here:

(1) Turion looks to offer about ~30 min or so less battery life under more intensive usage. However, in mostly idle usage Turion should provide equal or better battery life than Centrino. My site will have a more detailed review of Turion vs Pentium M in the coming weeks.
(2) The Compaq V2000z is a 14" widescreen Turion; should be the same thing as the Livestrong L2000 but more expensive and silver. All of the above should have the same exact chassis as the dv1000. For a detailed review of the dv1000, take a look here.
(3) There is no X200 in the L2000. It uses the Radeon XPress 200M chipset which uses an integrated form of the X300 GPU, sharing system RAM. I do not know if this is dynamic sharing or not.

For those who want a cheap Turion notebook that is built well and comes with a 3 year warranty, check out HP's business nx6125. 15" XGA/SXGA+, same graphics, Turion. Standard features include bluetooth, 3 year warranty, and biometric security. Starts @ $999
