Nice deal on the Toshiba. Costco still wants $74.99 for the modem - which I thought was a great price. Then again, I bought mine for $74.99 from them when CompUSelessA was selling them for $149.99.

Do you actually save anything by having your own cable modem. I mean, I'm willing to make the investment, but will Road Runner cut the price on me or anything? And also which one is better, the Motorola or the Toshiba?

The Toshiba PCX2200 rang up at BestBuy Saturday for $89.99 and also printed out a $50 MIR and a $20 MIR (nets to $19.99 + tax). Both MIRs went to BestBuy at Calais, ME.

I'm happy.

Also, our cable provider, Insight, has trouble with the Motorola modems, according to both BestBuy and Insight, so check before you buy.

HAppy hunting!!

This varies between cable providers. Some offer the discount some don't, but it's usually $5-10/month when they do. Just call Roadrunner and ask them.

As for which modem is better, the Motorola has some features that the Toshiba lacks, like a 10/100 LAN port and a suspend button that shuts off the Internet connection. Of course the 10/100 port isn't much use on a cable modem. It seems there isn't much difference between the functionality of different cable modems, they are more limited by the cable system itself. But if you hear about any compatibility issues between your cable ISP and a particular brand or model, like Hychka mentioned, definitely take that into account.

Yes you do actually save something if you were like me - having cable modem for over a couple of years now. Still renting one now. But will soon cancel the cable modem rental as I plan on ordering the Motorola SB4200 from Best Buy soon enough after this post. My ISP is Comcast, and they charge $5 per month. And since I have cable service for over 2 years, it's best to just buy a cable modem now. It's going to be $94.04 after tax - $30 rebate = $64.04. It should take about 1 year and 1 month to cover this investment (13 months * $5 = $65). Better to get rid of the age old SB3200 that I have now and get the SB4200.

I was told by my installer about a month back that in his experience with Cox Cable High Speed Internet, the Toshiba '2200' has been the most reliable modem. Again, this is just a statement by my installer. However, I would assume that he's had enough experience in this area to know what stands the test of time. In my case, I originally went with a Best Data modem that could only keep a connection held for 5 minutes. After about 6 hours of the messy situation, I headed for Costco to pick up a Toshiba '2200' modem. With the exception of a couple of interruptions by the cable company - due to local construction, my connection has been very, very solid with this modem since installing it. In my case, the new Toshiba was only about $20 more than the used Best Data modem that I had purchased -- and more than well worth it. I've since returned the used Best Data modem to the E-Bay person/company that I bought it from and received a full refund.

Can you please check these rebates and see if they are new subscriber rebates or something? Seems unlikely that they are if they go to BB, but who knows...

$20 MIR is for everyone; the $50 MIR required new account activation (Adelphia for me.)

hychka: did you have to sign up for new cable internet service for your $50 MIR?

[. Just call Roadrunner and ask them.

You can also check your bill. Anything from ~$5-$10 that says rental fee, equipment fee, etc. etc. that isn't your cable service, your internet service, or fed taxes/royalties may be the extra cost per month your cable company is charging to amortize THEIR equipment . I remember when I returned mine, saw the amount they would have charged me on the return receipt..... $200!!!!

I bought the 2200 at BB today. No rebate printed, but it was on the shelf at $59.99 so no price match needed w/ CompUSA.

hychka - can you scan & post? I can't find a rebate for this anywhere online.
