I'm trying to find out. I'm guessing that the motherboard should at least support the 65nm Conroes & Allendales.

It has a 2 GB Intel CPU, that has to be good right?

Ordered a similar box for my parents a while back. IMO the case is pretty good for a cheaper OEM box and seems to be easy to work with.

I bought a few emachines for friends as gifts. They just wanted something to surf the web. The only problem was after about 1-2 years the fans on the P/S started failing bearings going... Some were stopped already. For a micro p/s they wanted like around 100 bucks so I moded the machines to accept a standard P/S - Bring out the sledge hammer! were gonna do some case moding!

Oh well. to my knowledge they are still working well.

This is not a good deal. And not to thread crap, I will say why:

This is a SLOW single core celeron and is functionally not upgradable. What I mean is that you dont have enough power supply to upgrade this CPU. To upgrade the CPU you need CPU+Powersupply which cools this deal off significantly.

Video card? you dont have 80W to spare. Again, its Video card+Power supply.

This is a dead end box, and lets face it, Vista will make this already slow system feel like a 500Mhz celeron.

If you want to buy this for you, then feel free, but have a heart and dont pass it off to friends and family.

Upgrading the PS won't cost much, as a box like this doesn't need the best of the best. This thing also may come with vista, but it also should have a free windows 7 upgrade via emachines which still goes on through mid january I believe. It's a perfect box for family member who just needs web browsing and office stuff, which is all most families need.

If it does have the free win7 its a great deal for a terminal/web browser box

I think he meant it would have cost $100 to replace with an official emachine PSU. It also may not have been a standard mATX.

Emachines have had problems before with their PSUs. I repaired several of them that were 4-5 years old where the Bestec PSU blew out and took the mother board with it after about 2 years.

Not a bad deal. In for one.

Maybe I can soup it up a little bit with an E5200 ($45), an Enhance 500W PSU ($15), and a video card ($??).

No Win7 drivers on emachines site, but the mobo and hardware should be pretty standard. Does anyone know which ECS mobo is in here? Maybe a cross-flash would unlock some overclocking features, although it would likely wipe out the SLP coding in the BIOS that activates Vista.

Trying to build my own equivalent at Newegg:

im not suggesting it should be 'best of the best' but good enough is a requirement right? emachines are the bane if techies for a good reason. bad power supplies and cut corners at every turn.

This is eligible for Windows7 according to:
http://www.emachines.com/windows7upgrade/#models
this is a ET1810-01

This single core celeron (1.6Ghz) will be uncomfortable for any user with either vista or 7. An upgrade would be very desirable which would really require a power supply upgrade. And lets be real here, a $15 power supply is like running with a knife pointed directly into your eye. lets say you should really be looking at a $30 power supply(shipped) and an e5200 which is about $60-65 across the web(not $45 as listed earlier) so you are looking at adding about $95 making this about $280 by the time its really usable.

its pretty low end, you can get a quad core 2.3ghz + 4Gb ram + 640GB Drive etc etc for $350 @ SD forums (search 1772688)

Sure, $350 > $185 but we should really be A)comparing $350 > $280 and then B)whether $70 is a good value for 2 extra cores running 50%, twice the ram, 5x hard disk, better name and better quality.

single core celeron plus notoriously bad power supply = unhappy user. this, in my opinion that is, is a $185 poorly spent and any attempts to upgrade it are essentially attempts to polish a turd. what do you get when you polish a turd? a shiny turn.

The only way I would consider this is if you could use the OEM windows license on another PC and essentially get a free DVD burner and some cheap spare parts. You cannot, by the way, use this OEM license on another computer per the license.

Oh, and its from Tigerdirect!

After seeing a bunch of dual core laptops for $320-350 this past holiday, this deal doesn't seem so hot. Add in a monitor, wifi card, power supply, new CPU and this desktop just doesn't compare.

i.e. get a laptop.

I'm pretty sure this single core Celeron is faster than an Atom and many folks are using netbooks with Atom to browse the web and other light tasks without any problem. This computer is fine and perfectly usable for that type of duty and I don't think anyone was suggesting it for more intensive computing.

Bing is 8% for TD right now, how are you getting $25.00 off ???

it should be $175 with bing not $165.

still a good deal for a basic machine.

This is more than plenty for an office machine.

The model matches but this system is running basic. From your link.

Which Microsoft operating systems will qualify for the Upgrade Program?
To be eligible for the Program, you must purchase a new PC between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010. The PC must come with a valid Windows Vista® Home Premium, Windows Vista® Business or Windows Vista® Ultimate Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached.

Use Bing to search for "video card". A sponsored link for Tiger Direct will appear at the top of the page offering 12.8%. Use that link and you'll get 12.8% CB.

Everything is relative. My relative currently is trying to run XP on a KLE-133 motherboard with a Duron 1.3 Ghz CPU and only 256 mb of PC-100 ram. Compared to THAT system, this weak 1.6 Ghz Celeron with 2gb of DDR-2 and onboard Nvidia 7050 video will seem lightning quick, even with Vista. It also comes with a memory card reader that Dell doesn't offer on the Inspiron you reference. Plus you have to pay shipping for the Dell, and probably sales tax, too, since Dell has a presence in a lot more states than Tiger Direct does. This particular Emachine is a standard small ATX case, and will accomodate standard ATX PSU's. I acknowledge that the Bestec PSU's are a weak point on the Emachines, but are easily upgraded. (I do agree that $19.99 PSU's are probably not the way to go, but you can get a decent one for $30-$40) If it does turn out to be disappointedly slow, I can pick up a nice dual core CPU Celeron Wolfdale for $53 which also has the 1 mb cache along with 2.4 Ghz clockspeed. I am also considering throwing in my brother in law's leftover Geforce 9300 video card, since I installed a new HD4670 in his HP on Christmas Eve (together with a new Corsair 400VX PSU, see HP's aren't known for beefy PSU's either) and while the 9300 is a sorry excuse for a video card, I presume it will give better performance than the onboard video, and the price is right.
So, thanks for not crapping on my thread. Some people will be very happy to nab one of these emachines, while some, like you, will happily pass.

What do you mean it's not new? I thought that this PC for $190 was brand new. At least I didn't see any mention of refurb or used.

It is new. Look at the top of the page, they have the drill-down category navigation. It's listed under "New PCs".

It's not my fault that you didn't get in on previous Hot Deals. The $15 PSU is a high-quality, Enhance, 80-plus certified PSU. Better quality than an EarthWatts 380. And TigerDirect, through Amazon.com, was offering the E5200s for $40 + $3 shipping. I picked up two of them.

Plus, given Intel CPUs' power consumption, I doubt that you would have to change the PSU out if you were only going to upgrade to an E5200. 250W should still be more than plenty. If you were going to add a gaming video card, though, that's another story.

All in all, this is a very cheap, very upgradable, starter PC. It's also selling for less than what it would cost to build it yourself.

Great deal!

A BSEL mod could bring that Celeron 420 from 1.6 Ghz, to a 2.1 GHz "Core Solo".

Onboard video probably sucks for Vista/Win7 Aero interface.
But at least you have a PCIe-16 slot.
Drop in the $18 AR PNY 8600GT from Newegg.

You are correct - it is new. I thought it was a refurb like the others that have been posted. I'll edit to prevent confusion. Thanks.
