i bought this printer last week, buy.com 182 shipped.
most of the time i get peeved when i see the exact item i just bought for less, but honestly, i would have gladly paid more for this one.

4800dpi, 2 picoliter droplets, theres nothing in this price range that has the high dpi and the ultra small drop size.
usb 2.0, finally get to use that feature on my 8ka5+
every piece is replaceable, individual color tanks, and even the print head.
crazy fast, faster n some of the cheaper laserprinters we have in the office.

the only shadow of doubt is the new i950 thats suppose to come out soon. I think its out in europe already.

same super duper print head as the 850 but with a 6 color ink tank..$350 i think. should be the ultimate photo printer

canon i950

for general purpose i think the 850 is still the best bet.. and dont believe the preconcieved notions of the 4 color printers.
imho my i850 prints on photo paper are much better than one of my colleagues epson 960 six tanker.

Its super fast, the photo prints are gorgeous and the cost per page is lower than anything out there.
if yer in the market for a new printer, yer nuts not to get this.

Can the rebate be used no matter where it is purchased? I sniffed around for a non-beast buy version of it without much luck.

*EDIT* found a PDF of the rebate on crapusa's site. no mention of any restrictions.

I bought this last month to replace a NEC 1260 that needed a new $125 cartridge that has become increasingly hard to find over the years since I bought the NEC laser at CDW in Chicago.

The I850 makes more sense in every light to medium application, than any other printer that I can think of.
It really is fantastic. The only fault that I can come up with is that I sometimes have to receive the sheets as they emerge and spread them out to dry for a second or two. There is a setting that will accomplish the same thing if it is to be run in a hands-off mode.

I also purchased 4 extra black and two each of the color cartridges at less than $50 delivered.
Tom's Hardware was right...this thing is as good as they say.

I also sprung for the $30 BB three (or four) year replacement warranty as I planned to use the aftermarket consumables.

You can get the rebate form at the Canon site as well. It is good everywhere except SAMS as SAMS has a model i850S.

Pretty sure it won't work. I remember some people at the printin forum @ dpreview tried and were denied.
The recei[t you have to send in will denote the i850s and the rebate form states i850.

Oh... That is what he meant. I didn't understand what he was trying to say and that is why I ignored it in my last post.

BTW, I'm the one that mentioned Portland and Vancouver.

Gamemaster:
At the very least, Frys in Wilsonville has it in todays add for the 199-30. But, if you were looking at MailOrder, Buy.com has it for a lot less and you still get a rebate. Just look on Pricegrabber for the i850.

I will try BB today as they also give you 2 packs of paper.

I just bought one from Buy.com. Man, I hate waiting for MIRs. Has anyone had any previous experience with Canon's MIRs? How long do they take?

Cool...I am only going to BB as I have a 10% off store coupon, and they give you 2 packs of Canon 4x6 paper.

I just got one for $150. The box was missing its UPC but everything else seemed okay. With my 10% the price was brought down to $135.00. If anything is wrong with it I will just return it.

Great, my wife called from BB and they did get them. She brought the Sunday ad and got 2 packs of the expensive Canon pro 4x6 borderless paper included...and she used a 10% off coupon as well.

I also see that carrotink has a carrot bunch...10 cartridges!!

Question for anyone else who has installed this yet.

I have just opened the box and looked online. The new driver and sw seems to be dated Nov 2002. My cd's files are mostly July 2002.

Have any of you installed from the cd and updated the drivers yet?
I was just wondering if I should just use the new online software/drivers and ignore the cd?

TIA

I usually get the latest drivers off of the manuf. site.
Here is a quote from my readme file within my i85 directory:
"Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000
BJ Printer Driver Canon i850 Version 1.60"

So the driver is version 1.60, no mention of a date.

The site has Easy-Photo-Print v111 and Driver version 1.62. Not sure what the version of EasyPhotoPrint is on the CD.

I got one last night and Boy does it fly when set to B/W print mode.
I have to once a week print 80 to 100 pages front and 1/2 back. My Hp 932c took forever compared to this.
This thing is next to heaven.
I got one at Sams club for 148 something plus tax.

Well, I answered my own question.

IF you have not gotten this printer yet, do not install the XP Driver from the CD. I got the new one from the Canon Site and when you start it the first thing it tells you to do is REMOVE the old version. So, I did good by just downloading the new one when I installed it the first time!

Hope this saves someone else some time.

P.S. Same may be true of Easy-PhotoPrint as I downloaded the new version of that too. Did not install that yet...not sure I need it.
