Is this one of the "good" Epsons, that has no electronics in the cartridges, so refills are dirt cheap, or is it a "bad" one like Lexmark, where cartridges have electronics in them, and drive your per page price through the roof?

This is an outstanding photo printer. By far the best in this price range.

If you're not interested in printing photos, however, this isn't the printer for you. You can get the same quality for much cheaper elsewhere.

(But if you ARE looking for a photo printer, and you're willing to use quality photo paper, you won't believe the output from this thing.)

MontyBurns,
you said it
this is a very good photo printer, I find that if I use the Epson matt photo paper, the photos are very very good

staples has a ok price on the ink

I got some of the megatoners for $7.75 they work ok for the nonphoto printing but are no good for photo

if anybody wants the megatoners PM me

THIS PRINTER IS VERY GOOD

I saw this tonight while at my CostCo B&M.

Great printer, super low price, no rebate hassles and CostCo has a very liberal return policy.

What's stopping you lurkers from buying this printer?

If you are looking for Photo paper on this, Buy.COM has some of the best prices I found. The Epson S041141 8x10 glossy is $6.76 per pack and the Epson S041257 8x10 matte is $8.51. Free shipping over $100. Plus there's a 10% off coupon for order over $100 (Discover card) or more floating around.

I picked up 8 packs of the glossy and 7 of the matte -- total delivered was $102.26!

Be wary gents and ladies:

Hp and Epson are now making printers that must use a new cartridge
You can't refill them

As per above reference re Lexmark... 'talonts':
Please don't babble if you're clueless

I have a Lexmark Z52 with electronics in the cartridge and I've already refilled it
six times and it's still printing like a champ
If you do a lot of printing and plan on refilling your cartridge I'd recommend doing
some homework on the model you are planning to buy

Caveat emptor

Hellraiser,

Bite me. I'm not clueless, I know you can refill the Lexmark cartridges. However, the quality of the ink is key, and knowing where to buy a good ink is of key importance. If you don't know of a good ink supplier, you can waste a lot of money and several old cartridges experimenting until you get good results. I bought the "wrong brand" of ink to refill a 1975 cartridge, and could not get it to print without banding/striping even after multiple cleanings of the cartridge.

Read this thread more carefully, and you'll see someone noting that an Epson refill for the 820C doesn't give very good results when printing photos - that's probably because of the quality of the ink used.

Well,

i have a 6 color epson 1200. I also tried a 820. My colors were almost indistinguishable. My 1200 has a CIS system with OEM non Epson ink and the 820 had Epson carts.

6 color is the way to go if you intend to pront photos on Glossy or Photo matte paper.

Also, If you'd like to refill chipped cartridges, there is software you can buy on the net that will reset the ink levels of the chips. There are also hardware chip resetters. $20-30.

Hellraiser is the one that needs to do more research. Yes Epson now does have chips in their carts, however the generic carts also have the same chip so while we can buy generic NEW carts your forced to refill the Lexmarks or buy refilled ones because nobody makes generic NEW lexmark compatible carts (I've never seen them for sale anyways but you're welcome to point me to them if they exist)

AND, they do make little chip resetters so that you can indeed reprogram the chip on the Epson carts so that you can refill them. But considering the compatible new carts for the Epson cost $7.75 it's not even worth my time to try and refill them.

Not to mention that I tried refilling my old Lexmark carts while the black worked fine, I could never get the Cyan working in the color, it was a total pain in the ass to refill and the price of the refill kit wasn't exactly cheap either.

Well I just tried the Megatoners cart for the 820 and it is not nearly as good as the Epson cart. However, I think the problem lies in using the software provided by Epson for printing pictures. I tried using it with Photoshop and it is much better quality with the "compatible" carts in Photoshop. Now I just need to tweak the settings I think. Plus I'll have to load some of the photo printing software I have that is not for Epson.

Are you sure. I just saw this print in my local OD marked for clearance at $69.99. If there is rebate, total cost should be $19.99 plus tax.

If I remember, I'll visit OD B&M tomorrow to verify this.

I am very sorry. It is Epson C60 marked for sale at $49.99 in OD. How is C60 compared with C820?

C60 is more of an all around color printer, 820 is designed for photos. 820 is much better for images.

In the name of science:
I finally broke open the seal on the Megatoners cartridge and printed an image of my dog on the same paper (premium glossy photo paper) with all the same settings from the Epson Print Factory software.

The Megatoner cart. held up really well, but my dog (a buff Cocker Spaniel) does look more pale with the Megatoner cart. and his toungue appears a bit more pink with the Epson cart. Overall the image looks good, the detail is all there, grass in the background looks great (every blade has all it's details) and I don't see any running or ill effects like that. It simply appears the Epson carts colors are bit more vivid. Results may vary from software app to app, I used Epson's software which may be tweaked for Epson's cart's pigments so this may be easy to correct with other software. Overalll I'm please, I was expecting worse from a cartridge that cost 1/3 the price of the Epson.

Oh well, thought it sounded to good to be true.

Thanks for the clarification.

The 820 is well worth the extra $20 over the C60.

The cheap generics suck in this printer? Thats sucks, thats the only reason why I bought it. The cost of normals inks are too much for me (I want to be able to print random stuff and not be worried about the cost). Right now I have a Espson 880, generics are dirt cheap (~$2) and it prints photos pretty well, I was hoping to upgrade.

BTW, doesn't Costco still have there 100 epson glossy photo pages for $20? That is by far the best deal in photo paper, stock up, I think I'm going to go soon to by 2 or 3 more packets, the thought of them being gone scares me

Ghamu,
Read my previous update. I would NOT say it sucks, it's actually really good for printing random stuff and photo's. Unless comparing the two side by side like I did, you may not even be able to tell. If were going to print a 8x10 to frame and hang in the living room then the Epson might be the way to go, but otherwise I think the cheap'o ones work amazingly well for the $$. I'll probably try some others from various other companies to see which give the best results.

BTW the brand on Megatoners is "G&G", several other companies sell the same ones (4ink.net) at 2X the price, so don't waste more money for the same stuff.

Hmmm, I just went back to check, and it's the 820 at my OD. Very well might be a pricing mistake just at my store. In any case, I'm going to try to cash in on it.
