Warm - Hitachi Death Star 200gb for $80 after MIR @ Compusa

I was at Compusa taking advantage of the DVD+R deals when I saw they had a number of hitachi death star 200gb drives for $80 after an $80 MIR and a $20 IR (Initial cost is $180). Thanks to other people posting in this thread, I know they're PATA100 drives, 7200rpm, with a three year warranty. It might be a hot deal if you can look past the death star label on the box.

Yes, this is the same brand (though a different company) as the infamous IBM deathstar line. If you need 200gb cheap, but you don't mind the infamous deathstar label, this is your deal.

The "deathstar" worries are overexaggerated, I think. The problem was restricted only to one line of IBM's drives, the 75GXP, and it wasn't necessarily a guaranteed thing there, either.

I have a 120GXP, and my brother's twin drive just decided to.... stop working. He left his machine on 24/7, and it just... died. Mine still works, but it makes odd 'hiccup' noises every now and again if you leave it on too long - the weakness of the line.

i've always owned hitachi's (had a 60, 80, and now a 250) and never experienced any problems whatsoever. My 75GXP lasted me 3 years+ no problems

Been using my 60GB "deathstar" for over 2 years now, rarely turn the comp off either. I recently ordered a SATA Hitachi 160GB "deathstar" and it's an excellent drive so far, couldn't have expected any better.

So true. I have installed probably close to 100 of these (including the 75GXP and 60 GXP Series) and have never had 1 fail.

People don't know when to stop with the Deathstar label...That problem's been fixed since IBM handed their hard drive line over to HGST. My Hitachi 80GB SATA is excellent.

I had two 75GXPs die on me. have seagate and wd special ed. and very happy.

Well, had a 60GXP that died in 4 weeks, a 75 GXP that just started to develop errors about 2 weeks ago. Both used in a on-off workstation sort of PC. (the 75 GXP got turned on twice a week)


Now on the other hand, i have a 12 gig WD thats been running for 3 years non-stop, and a Fuji 6 gig thats been running for 4 years..

(start of baseless openion)However, that being said, i think the GXP line was just picky, under ideal condition the drive is fine, and my conditions just were not ideal. And Second, i don't think Hitachi would have bought a crap drive line, so they must have improved.(end of baseless openion)

And after all that. I'm mildly tempted to jump. Retail box? And whats the warranty length?

Yes it is retail box and has a 3 year warranty

We'll I bit... but I'm wondering why they had such a big stack. They must have had 30 on display as compared to 2 or 3 of every other type of drive they sell.

Makes sense, when all their other drives are priced over 2x per gig, compared to this deal.

I wouldn't describe the distinct "click of death" as a "hiccup" myself, so my assumption is that you might be hearing the regularly scheduled unparking of idle heads, as per the Deathstar firmware fix... just a guess.

I have been using IBM/Hitachi drives for a while now and really like the performance. While I had 2 75GXPs die on me, I have never had a problem with any other series.
