I checked to see if this had been posted. If I overlooked it I am sorry.
My local ( Victoria Texas ) Office Depot has a 30 gig 7200 RPM Maxtor Hard drive for 69.99 ( 20.00 instant + 30.00 Mail in ). If this is not another one of those rebagged Quantums it's a fair deal.

You can get a WD 40G 7200rpm from Dell for less than $80 without any rebate w/ free shipping.
If I don't get a PM for the 60G from BB on Friday, then I will go for the Dell drive.

I'm under the impression that the D7xxX series are either Quantum or have some serious Quantum influences...I have a 20GB 7200rpm ATA133 one that is a D740X...and I did not really think it was all that(ignorance..not experienced it..lol) and one day I corrupted my 40GB 7200 Maxtor( yah...one those that are very readily recognized as a Maxtor.. )and needed a drive to rescue the illin'....had the D740X waiting ...so I used it...have not completely resurrected my 40GB( was able to pull over all my valuables tho...yeah yeah..yeah..pr0n...lol ..seriously had a lotta mp3s and programs stashed) but the 20GB D740X is KICKAZZ !! quiet at it too...hehe

True... Quantum drives are pretty darn good... I mean, in my personal opinion nothing beats an IBM, but this is a very nice deal.

I wouldn't touch a Western Digital with a 10-foot pole. Their RMA department knows me by name.

my Maxtor 7200rpm 40 gig drive died on me so I rma'ed it and recieved a quantum AS drive instead. The quantum is a little quieter while idle (just a touch louder when accessing), but the pitch is lower so its overall much less annoying than the maxtor. the access time is just a touch faster. Its better, but just by a little. But it certainly isnt worst than the maxtor.

Does anyone know where the MIR is located? It's not at the Maxtor site. Anyone have a scan of it? Thanks!

I bought 2 40 gig maxtors only to find quantum drives in it, at first i felt cheated but they seem to work fine so far. mine were a bit louder than my other maxtors...but it comes with maxtors awesome warranty so i am fine. i had a 30 gig maxtor making a really loud noise on me and i rma'ed it and they sent me a refurbished 40 gig maxtor...good deal.

OK I got it, at any rate its $99.99 on there website, wouldn,t let me use the 30 off till I threw some paper clips in..Now in IL we have to pay sales tax, that was a little over 7 bucks..total was $77.03..SKU# 368-111 on there sales flyer and website..wonder if I can get instant 20 off in sale paper + $30 mail in..Got email conformation for local store pick up and it says for 11-23..

Even if I only get the $30 mail in rebate thats $47 total tax in all for a 7200 rpm 30 gig drive..What do you people think, also I,m going to see if I can drop the 99 cent clips as the tax drove it over a hundred..Its a steal but suppose they give me the instant $20 at the store..That would be like robbing the place..

I much prefer Quantum as I,ve had good luck with them, but I,ll take either for that kinda money, didn,t want a 5400rpm like BB..

I am employed by the Government and we buy hundreds of Dell boxes, the last batch we got have had HD's failing frequently, every time, it has been a Quantum HD that failed.

maxtors are faster than quantums: the diamondmax 60 maxtors have a 8.7 ms seek time which places it just below the IBMs in performance. also maxtor has some incredible customer support if one of their drives happens to go down, until their competition <cough> western digital <cough>.

BTW if you order from website mark cash, don,t need credit card and pick up at store as $30 rebate is avaliable only at store..If you don,t like deal tomorrow at the store you can cancel...In case they don,t wanta give you the $30 rebate or something...I,m a dreamer but it sure would be nice to get that instant $20 also...

Nice price, thanks for the info. I've used mainly Maxtor's for the past 7 years, a few quantums and unfortunately 2 western digitals that were given to me. Never had a problem with a quantum or maxtor yet. The western digital's I were given died within months. I enjoy how their forum had nothing but people talking trash about their hard drives. My work used to use western digitals before I got there. I had to send in 2 from my work. I got them to switch over to Maxtor's, and for the past 3 years haven't had a single problem yet.

Just my 2 cents

very odd... i logged in and added this drive and some markers to my cart. applied the $30 off coupon and selected in-store pick up. everything was in stock ready to go. i left the screen up and went to bed planning to hit submit in the morning (i wanted the purchase date to be 11/23 for the rebate). woke up at 5AM and came back.... the drive is mysteriously out-of-stock. :|

The rebate is from OD so it looks like instore only. The drive is a Diamond MaxPlus 60. Just picked one up

Picked up a Maxtor and a Quantum, both 30 GB, 7200 last year. The maxtor was much louder (had a high pitched dog-whistle type sound as well as some loud crunching during reads) and the Quantum performed much quieter, both while on, and while reading. I ditched off the maxtor to a friend. Also, Quantum sounds like a cooler name. And cooler names are totally radical this millenium.

Ordered this before I went to bed (early Friday) for in-store pick-up, every thing was fine said it was in stock. Went to check on order when I got up today and now the drive is back-ordered, so I cancelled.

Hey there.. Picked up one of these 30G drives yesterday at the OD B&M.

$99.99 - $20 off B&M coupon - $30 MIR = $50 !

The drive was manufactured Sept 13, 2001. On one sticker below an IBM logo there are
smaller letters reading Fireball Plus AS and made in Japan, along with firmware
A1Y15, IBM serial# and part numbers and other specs. On another sticker is
AT Fireball Plus AS with Quantum Part Number QMP3000AS-A.

Came in a Maxtor box... Is it really a Maxtor?
