I think Prolink is a okay brandname in Asian market. not much in US.
They are coming up with a capture card Xcapture that does 10-bit A/D 720X 480 with Conexant CX23881 chip. (
Is that way better than 878 chip??
They have PlayTV HD (high definition) and PlayTV XP. (i see prolink PIXELVIEW PlayTX pro is for sale for 47 at here.
But i mainly like to use the card for video transfer from tape to VCD/SVCD, and not much into watch TV or record TV show(but would be nice to have this option)

no price advanage over the Hauppauge WIN-TV PVR (or more). I guess there are just not much low cost hardware software... yet.

has some data info for 878/879, 878A and more.

so only 879 chipset can do full stereo decoding for both TX audio and FM radio and has full dbx noise reduction. Means if you get 878. You are mono all the way.
878/879 is PCI 2.1

and they are "Not Recommended for New Designs" because 878A has it all with PC98/PC99 compliant, WHQL certifiable! ACPI support. Of course its stereo like 879.
While CX23880/CX23881 are more to the High Definition Television (with CX 23490, offload CPU load for MPEG-2 decode)
CX23881 are more of the European market and has no support for high-level MPEG-2 decoding.
Both has a 10-bit decoder for composite and s-video so its better than the 8-bit of 878. However, note that there is macrovision detector in the chip....

Can someone tell me what the difference between the AverTv and Leadtek card is?

It seems to use the same chip and features looks virtually identical.

They are identical, hardware-wise. Software is a little different, Avermedia advertise that they have 16 channel preview - useless feature if you ask me - when it scans channels automatically and dispalys a thumbnail of one frame on each channel (no sound). Same feature is available through PowerVCR software on any BT878 tuner card, including Leadtek one. Get the card, which has the cheapest price.

I want to build a multimedia powerhorse and I'm considering dual athlon setups, RAID setups, dual CRT's and what not.{NOT a gamer...}
However, the AIW card or the TV tuner card plays the most important role in all this and I'm still not sure If i should go with the
AIW 8500 or either this MSI card or the leadtek.(can't find any reviews for the MSI and I don't know what's gonna happen to the 8500's once the 9000 and the 9700's come out.

my main uses will be :
watch tv on my pc,
to record shows,
to do season pass recording (like tivo),
connect my digital or analog comcorder (still haven't bought one) to extract video and burn it into a Video CD/DVD,
connect my olympus D3020z dig camera and watch slideshows on my TV.
sometime in the future, I will be buying either a tivo/replayTV and will 99% hack it to extract shows and stuff and do drive upgrades too.

so, what should I do now........i'm so confused.
and I've got to get this done before I get married in Jan! (a very wise man once said that buy all u want before u get married.....)..

The mono sound on the Leadtek is too annoying. Definitly gonna be ditching it as soon as I find a great deal on a better card. We're currently having our floors redone, so, in the meantime, we had to move everything into our kitchen and have been living there. The cable won't reach, so we've been watching old VHS movies on my VCR on my computer and the sound quality pisses me off. I just watched Phantom Menace in mono!

There's no way to get around the non-stereo functionality of this card is there?

gordita, dont go with AIW. reason is that if you upgrade ur video card, you'll lose the tuner as well.

dont go for the all in wonder. some via chipsets (such as mine, msi k7t266) dont work with its software well.

I bought a new card and this one is a stereo version - the card looks exactly like the original version but there is a very small daughter board attached to the main board, and it sounds really nice. If you want to buy this card, make sure you buy the Stereo version. I think the TV picture quality is the best compare with any other TV cards, plus the drivers are updated constantly.

Another reason is Leadtek card has the FM capability, is nice because sometime you just don't feel like to watch TV. I found it's a very nice feature.

Did I mention you can schedule record FM broadcast?
