Seems Lenovo is clearing out their inventory of Scratch and Dent N580 and G580 laptops with Sandy Bridge based Pentium CPUs. Not the speediest things in the world, but would work great as a laptop for Parental Units or just simple web surfing.

Not bad, but I got a G580 with an i5 from there a couple of weeks ago for around the same price, and a Z580 with an i5 for about $300

Just be careful that the dead/stuck pixel policy is acceptable, refurbs sometimes make you live with them when you would be able to RMA the laptop if bought new.

FYI, Dell had a similar laptop for $299 a week ago, but new. It seems the slow market for PCs means more deals on them.

I bought a B980 G580 (4GB, 320GB, Win8) a week or two ago for $230 (taxes included) from the outlet.
I added a 4GB Crucial so-dim, swapped out the HD for an Intel 320 I had laying around and installed Windows 7.
All in all it's not a bad rig for the $$.

I got a similar one, forget the exact model for $209 shipped. My daughters laptop had 2x8gb in it so I swapped one of her 8gb sticks for the 4gb one.

What would be the benefit of buying the G580 over the N580? Seems like the N580 has:

* one extra USB 2.0 port
* RAM upgradable to 16GB versus 8GB
* a higher potential HDD storage capacity listed
* a $5 cheaper cost

I had the same question. Is there a difference in the build or cosmetics? I found a lot of people that bought them from BB complaining about the touchpads on the G580s.

Almost all of these units are scratch & dent which indicates to me they are returns from retail stores like BestBuy.

I'm tempted to get one but I got burned on several Dell Inspiron M5010 units I bought from Dell outlet and were also BB returns. They lasted about a 1.5 to 2 years before the motherboards warped and caused the ati chips to start coming loose like the nvidia gpu problem from a few years ago. It seems like these low end retail units from Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. are designed to only last a couple of years.

bb has had a history of getting custom crippled machines from manufacturers, and they don't change the model numbers to distinguish it either. sometimes you can buy a laptop at bb and the same one off amazon and they are different. price is usually cheaper online and they don't have crippled features like the bb models.

i had the same trouble. get the new drivers from the support site and turn palm check sensitivity up now everything is great.

So far I've purchased two and they've been great. I got them for my kids and they don't treat them the best, but they are working without a hiccup so far.

Agreed I've seen a few super cheapies pop up but I can't actually check out with them.

I talked with one of their sales reps and they let me know the search has a ~25 minute delay compared to whats actually in inventory.
