MIR is $10 and free shipping. Tomato routers are getting hard to find since Buffalo can't sell in the USA. People seem to pay like $60 for these on fleaBay.

LINK

You can save $1 and get it for $45 AR at buy.com if you are able to use the $10 Google Checkout discount.

That's hot. I'm using one right now w/ DD-WRT. So far so good.

Can this be used as a bridge? I have an Xbox 360 and I need wireless for it. Is it worth it/easy enough to do versus just getting a MS Wireless adapter?

I use tomato and have WDS set up with 2 routers and my XBox 360 is wired into the second one (not the one plugged into the cable modem.) Works very well, even with TVersity running on a wireless desktop. Don't know about bridging with the stock firmware. I used the instructions here.

Can you guys define what you mean by "bridge mode" in this application?

Thanks,

Joe

What's Tomato, and why can't Buffalo sell here?

EDIT: Just googled the Buffalo issue. The injunction seems pretty improper given the Ebay ruling, but we'll see. I'm a big fan of their wireless gear, its always been a good value. If they hit the market again, I'll return as a customer.

Extending an existing wireless network.

Ok... I've got one location that has three wireless routers. One acts as a router, both wired and wireless. The other two are acting at access points (with the wire coming from the lan into the lan port of these two routers and DHCP turned off) but each has it's own wireless security settings and each shows up separately under available wireless networks (even though they are all on the same subnet.

So, if I were to be able to run them in bridged mode (which I probably can't... but if I could) would this just be seen as a single HUGE available wireless network, with a single authentication and then people could roam around under the umbrella of the whole thing and just jump node to node like cell phones do?

This can be done. Setting up the other routers as repeaters and creating a large network. You will likely need thirdparty firmware like DD-WRT. I'm not sure if Tomato firmware does it, but i have done this with DD-WRT

Yes, it is very easy to use bridge mode with either Tomato or DD-WRT. I personally just switched to Tomat from DD-WRT (which I had been using for about 3 years). Tomato seems to be a much better product, at least for anyone who knows anything about linux.... If you don't know linux, well, DD-WRT is probably a little easier to use, as their web interface has more options laid out which just require you to click a button or select something from a drop down menu. Tomato has much better underlying support for command line interface and a better linux configuration (at least in my opinion, but then I have 10 years of work experience doing Unix/Linux System Adminitration)...

Aren't we confusing a bridge with an access point?

A wireless access point is just that, a point to which something can connect wirelessly. It has an ethernet port, but no routing capability. But a bridge is sometimes used to make something that only speaks ethernet (i.e. an Xbox 360) speak wireless. No?

So the whole point is that I don't have a [convenient] ethernet port around where the Xbox is, and I was wondering if this would work as a bridge, plugged into its [the xbox] ethernet port. I'm pretty sure it will, I just wanted to check.

No problem here. You got it right. If you configure your 2nd router as a bridge, it will act just like an ethernet adapter to your xbox. In addition, it will allow you to connect your laptop to it via wifi, i.e. to extend the range of your main router.

An AP will require that you have a direct LAN connection to your first, i.e. main router.

I use both AP and bridge.

I got mine, can anyone tell me what receipt I should include with the rebate? I have the order confirmation which I printed at the end of the checkout, and I also have the packing slip. What do you think?

The rebate wants a sales receipt - I'm using the invoice that was emailed to me.

With a rebate, I copy and send, everything that even remotely pertains to it.

You guys can do what you want, but I've never had a rebate declined because of improper documentation.

Concerning the rebate: I ordered two of these. I'm curious if I should send both UPCs in the same rebate form or if each should be sent with its own rebate form. I read all of the PDF, as well as the Linksys Rebate FAQ and Tips page, but I'm still not certain.

In the PDF, it says to include UPC code(s) from the box(es) for each product purchased, so I'm leaning towards sending both UPC codes in with one receipt and rebate form.

Does this seem like the way to go to you all?
