This thing has two PCMCIA slots...what can those be used for? Would there be a way to network this player? I could see one slot for a PCMCIA HD, and the other for a WiFi card...

how long before hacked firmwares to play MOV and WMV?
muahhaha

ill wait a month for some feedback from regular people, and hopefully price will drop under 100, then ill buy this. since it deals with codecs, it might need some time to mature their firmware anyways.

yep..give it real media and WMV9 support and I'm in.... for now, I'll stick with my modded Xbox and XBMP

Wow, you really like junky quality video

nope, but a bunch of stuff I've "acquired" has been in those formats

Looks like there is finally a third brand that can play all of the formats as well as PAL and NTSC.
Currently I have a Pioneer that plays VCD, SVCD, DVD-R, DVD+R, but not PAL and an Apex
that plays everything but is very poor construction (so it isn't going to last forever). Now that
Apex stopped supporting SVCD, looks like we have a new leader in town.

well seeing that the firmware downloads off the site are simply just cd-images, it seems future hacking of the lvd-2001's firmware is inevitable. adding support for ogg, ac3, divx ;-), real media, quicktime, wmv, and a galore of other video and audio formats wont be that far behind (that is of course WHEN someone decides to take a crack at changing the firmware)

but looks to be a very promising dvd player at the front of a whole new generation of divx/xvid supporting players that will be coming out soon

Maybe nice DVD-player but I don't want too watch DIVX movies on 27 inch TV set 6 feet away. Maybe it is good to watch on 13 inch TV set from 10 feet. Forgive me but SVCD sometimes is not impressive but Divx - give me a break. Good to watch on PC only. My 2 pennies. Other standards including (X)VCD, (X)SVCD, MP3 etc are nice but Divx - sorry not for not small TV.

One of the reviewers at dvdr-help mentions that this player is loud. Guess I'll wait until I can see one in action somewhere, I already have a noisy little Apex. Of course, surely it can't be as loud as that one is.

Divx and XVid quality can be almost as good as DVD on TV. The problem is most of divx movies are badly encoded.

The problem I see with this player is that the divx/xvid technology evolves way too quickly. Their formware will always lag behind. For example it probably does not support the latest xvid codec, OGM and OGG codec.

Otherwise it looks great !

Is it really worth $140? I mean, you could easily build a custom "DVD player" for the same price or cheaper, but with all the mods you want. IMHO, I really dont see the advantage in this player, other than the fact that its already built for you. With the custom player you could install all codecs (like FFDshow) and not just watch Divx/Xvid only.

Looks okay... how does it compare to the KISS model?

I already have the XBOX for playing DivX files, but this could go in the bedroom, which was somehow declared offlimits to consoles...

It looks as though there is a code that will turn off macrovision and make it region free....

I am sorry but I don't buy it. SVCD is not looking as good as DVD (pretty close - around 85% of the time) and it takes 700MB per 30-35 minutes (usually don't dare to fit more than 35 minutes on one CD-R). I really doubt that 2 hours DIVX movie recorded on one 700MB CD-R, will be close to DVD. Even DVD does not look great all the time - especially scenes at night. Sorry but quality requires space and there is no workaround. As I said DIVX might look very good on 13 inch TV when watched 10 feet away.

As far as encoding is concerned, even some DVDs are not encoded well.

Does anyone know how user friendly this player is? I tried out a Cyberhome around X-mas time. Damn thing had to be hooked up FIRST via composite jacks in order to be able to see the menus to be able to enable the composite out jacks and progressive scan.

Anyone know if this player auto-senses and enables the composite outs?

Just for the record, well encoded DIVX movies look great on my 40" Widescreen TV from 10 feet away.
