thx for the headup. all my program is in scsi. i use ide to store mp3, mpg, divx and stuff therefore dont care if its ata33 or ata66.

Ark.. why would anyone "hate" to use Staples coupons? Simple to apply on-line and you get the drive for $80!?

Also, this drive is ATA100 .. don't worry about what the specs say on Staples site. It is ATA100....

Thanks for a great post Apache and welcome to the forum. Don't be discouraged by some of the negative comments, there are some that just think that way.

I just ordered this drive since this is the best deal I have seen on it so far. However I was extravagent and ordered a pen set instead of paperclips for grand total of $80.68 (have lifetime supply of paperclips already). Also went through Ebates for whatever that is worth. Need4spd is right, anyone hating coupons to the extent that they can't enter a 5 digit number for $20 has a problem. I think Ark thought it was a mail in rebate.

BTW I knew this is coupon not MIR, but some people just hate them.

You probably missed some great stories in 1999 when people were buying stuff with famous $50 of $50 Staples coupon or getting free $60 attache and the way Staples handled this. It was a lot of hating since that.

Bringing up the fact that it may be an ATA66 drive is fine but please don't hammer on people who are trying to post a good deal for you.

This may also be a 45 gig drive, as the one I got at Staples last year was listed as a 40 with a 5 gig for free *hah* blue sticker on the box. I then picked up the (at the time) ATA100 PCI controller card for $49 and also a Vortex II Turtle Beach card for $29, then used a $25 off $75 coupon. Add the $50 controller card rebate when purchased with the drive and I paid $4 for both. Ahhh, those giddy Staples days of PM and coupons are sorely missed.

Good deal .... and the drive is ATA100

because our " used " drive were bigger and cheaper. example: 40gig ata 66 5400 for $ 50.00 , 30gig ata100 7200 for 30.00

And furthermore, the performance difference between ATA66 and ATA100 is bearly noticable. Anandtech did a comparison some time back on this matter and it was only like an average of 3% or so faster, so big deal.

1) ATA66 compared to ATA100 <IS> noticeably faster, especially if moving large files from drive to drive or across the network.
2) Newegg and many others have an ATA100 and even an ATA133 of the same drive for around $85

So why get an ata66 drive?!

If newegg and staples had it for approximately the same price, I'd personally buy it from staples because 1)you get it faster and 2)If you're a dividends member, you get handy little coupons mailed to you each quarter, based on what you purchased.

Hi again....just want to clear this up.

I have bought 4-5 Maxtor Hard drives in the last few months...

40G from Staples was a Diamond Max 60 which is ATA100. (even though staples.com stated it was ata66... the box had a sticker on it "Now with support for ATA100)...FWIW, The series of drives that are ATA66 are the Diamond Max 45 series..

Also many of the retail Maxtor drives are actually Quantum Fireball AS which are ata100... personally I think the Maxtor drives are quiter than the Quantums.

I guess we'll have to wait a few days and see what model people actually get from Staples.....keep us posted.

(BTW, there are some Staples $15 off $100 & $30 off $150 coupons that are usable IN-Store floating around... emailed to staples customers. Check around..you will find the coupons + the $20 off $100...try FW or Google search.)
