btw, the hard drive is at least ATA/100 and may be ATA/133. maxtor hasn't made an ATA/66 hard drive in more than a year--i bought this exact same hard drive last year (early 2001) and it turned out to be ATA/100. they are changing over to all be ATA/133, so don't be surprised if it is ATA/133!

yeah, don't be discouraged about AT. half the people at Hot Deals forum really care about getting good stuff at good prices: the other half just like to disparage good stuff or got lost on their way to OT and like to post religious crap.

I wish they were the 40 + 5 gig free drives. I purhcased three of those last year. They have been nice drives. Besides, the extra 5 gigs would be nice. It was a real pleasure to buy a 40 gig drive that was actually more than that once formatted.

I just pickup 1 at my b&m staples. Its only 40gig...no extra 5gigz. Its a pretty good deal. use the 15 off 100 coupon and with tax it came to $92. Oh yea...on the box its saids ultra ATA/100.

I bought this same hdd from Staples about 8 months ago. It said ATA66 in the ad, but I got a ATA100. I see no reason why this would be a ATA66 drive.

BTW.. I used coupons and price matched and was thrilled to get it to $100 at the time. This is a pretty nice deal if you use the coupon.

Thrilling was getting the 45 gig version with a free zip drive over a year ago for $80+ tax after PM and coupon. That manager really didn't like having to sell three of them like that to me, but he lost the arguement when there policy was to PM and coupon regardless of free items. I wish that policy was back in force.

Please post the model # of the drive you get when you receive your drives.

I'm interested to see what staples is sending out now.

In my experience, they usually send drives that have been sitting on their inventory for 9+ months. Every drive I've ever received from them (about 10 total) has had the mfg date 9 to 10 months before the date I got the drive. and thus the warranty is much less then the 3 years that is advertised.

I've contacted staples about this and their response was "tough luck"

Thining about picking up a few of these drives at $80 if they are newer and haven't been sitting in their warehouse forever.

Might want to consider buying the latest Maxtor model D740X Plus ATA133 from newegg for $5 more (plus shipping). This drive has gotten some really good reviews recently.

I picked two of these up using the 30 off 150 coupon this afternoon at the B&M store locally. Both drives are the D740X-6L Fluid bearing ATA 133 drives. The box p/n is STO154000U and says ATA100. I'm tempted to go grab another pair for $160!! Thanks for the post and all the good deals found here!

You're new to this forum. Maxtor retail hd goes pretty fast at Staples, you always get the newest model inside it. Staples just uses the description from Ingram Micro, it must be Ingram not updating the database.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no way any IDE HD can keep up with a standard 100mbs network connection IMO(of course my opinion would change if we're talking about 10mbs). With large files, these maxtors won't see anywhere near 66mbs sustained DTR. With small sequential files, perhaps there would be a noticable difference, but there isn't much difference between 66 and 100 from the reviews I've seen. IDE drives have just begun to show a reasonable improvement of the ATA100 standard over 66. The difference between 100 and 133 is even less if even existent now.

The mystery grows! The possibility that I might get a fluid bearing ATA133 is intruiging. I will post details when I get the drive. Also someone said that the 3 year warranty was from manufactured date. I have always been under the impression that it was from the buy date.
I have had nothing but positive experiences with Staples. I got in on the Epson 880 printer at $45 and it is a gem. I have taken in certificates that printed out so blurred that you could hardly read them and not once have I ever been turned down.

I know how you feel. I usually pick the stuff up locally, and the cheapest thing I can find in the store is a ~$.50 chocolate ball. I went into staples 2 days in a row and made 2 or 3 seperate purchases each trip and got exactly one chocalate ball each purchase to get the price over the limit for a coupon.

You'd be really hard pressed to see the difference between ata66 and ata100. I doubt you could see it.

This hard drive can EASILY saturate a 100 mbit network. Theoretically, a 100 mbit network can transfer around 12.5 megabytes per second. However, with network overhead, you'll see even less. Modern 7200 rpm HD's can easily saturate this. I do it all the time on my network when I transfer large files and do server backups.

Ahh...I stand corrected. After telling myself not to confuse bytes and bits I did it anyway. That makes me want a 1000mbs network. I still stand by my assurtion that the difference between the ATA66 drives and 100 drives isn't significant, though. For the record, I wouldn't want to receive a 66, 'cause that might make the entire IDE channel run at 66 and that could be noticed with two HD's. It doesn't really matter. I really doubt anyone here will receive an ATA66 drive. I haven't seen staples B&M with a maxtor ata66 HD in 18 months or better.

Ummm... ATA 100 only has about a 15-20 percent increase in most raw data transferring rates, I doubt your really going to "notice" it that much.

ATA66 Conent Creation is actually faster than ATA 100 Content Creation

You can look at the rest of the benchmarks to see if paying more for a drive is worth the performance gain. I would take 4 HD Raid with ATA 33 anyday
