Anrath, I am not sure there are any BM coupons left. I have an old $10 off $30 coupon that has no expiration date on it but I suspect that it has expired. Does anyone know if there is anywhere on-line that you can plug in a coupon number and find out if it is still valid?

<< The mystery grows! The possibility that I might get a fluid bearing ATA133 is intruiging. I will post details when I get the drive. Also someone said that the 3 year warranty was from manufactured date. I have always been under the impression that it was from the buy date. I have had nothing but positive experiences with Staples. I got in on the Epson 880 printer at $45 and it is a gem. I have taken in certificates that printed out so blurred that you could hardly read them and not once have I ever been turned down. >>

I noticed that Maxtor posts the warranty end date for each drive model on their web site Maxtor.com . The warranty period starts as follows:

The start of the warranty period is the date of the last production for that drive, plus three months. If a drive is purchased from Maxtor or Maxtor's authorized reseller after the last production date for that drive, and proof of purchase can be provided, then the start of the warranty period is the documented date of such purchase.

So buy the newest models for the best warranty coverage of at least 3 years. They also have the following notice about OEM drives:

The limited, non-transferable warranty on products sold through an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is extended only to the OEM that purchases the products directly from Maxtor or Quantum. Therefore, owners of OEM manufactured equipment containing a Maxtor or Quantum product must contact the OEM or the place of purchase for warranty service.

I've never had one go bad but I understand from others that they are very good about honoring their warranty even on OEM drives.

Thanks for the info Z80. I guess the message here is to hang on to your receipt if you want the full 3 years warranty. As for OEM's, I try to avoid them where possible. It is bad enough to be involved in an RMA situation with one company rather than two. Not to mention the typically shorter warranty periods for most OEM's.

I did have occasion to return a Maxtor drive several years ago and they were very good, in fact they sent out a new one and allowed me to send back the old one with the box and label they furnished. They charged my credit card and then gave me credit back when they got the old one. I think most of the hard drive companys now do this.

if this price is considered decent (which I do), another option is to go for double the space at double the price. since the 40GB ends up at $80 plus tax, the 80GB maxtor can be had for $160 plus tax. base price is $190, and use one of the $30 off $150 coupons from the same place the $20 off $100 is at. since there are 3 of those $30 off $150 coupons, you can get up to three of these 80GB monsters, maybe for raid setup or whatever.

FWIW
was at Staples today and they had the Maxtor 60G/7200RPM for $149.99. There is a $30 off of $150 B&M coupon floating around bringing the cost to $119.99 for 60 GB......then they have the $50 rebate if you buy a Maxtor ATA100 interface card (which is $49.99).

So you can get a free ATA100 card.... or sell the card for 20-30 bucks.

Nice alternative... if you need a bigger drive.

I think the 80GB drive kit includes a ATA133 card. not sure.

"Includes all brackets and cables, UI33 PCI adaptor card for improved system performance"

they probably misread the specs and put UI33 by mistake. need a bigger picture of the box. can anyone confirm?

need4spd: is the $50 rebate for the combined purchase of an ATA100 card a new one from Staples? Maxtor had a $50 rebate a while back, and then it was replaced by a $25 one, but both already expired.

Some drives do have a $50 rebate sticker on them, but I suspect the rebate no long applies.

I got the drive today and low and behold it is th ATA133 fluid bearing model. The model number for the unit is D740X6L040J2. The box indicated it to be ATA100 and Kit: ST0154000U.Specifications

I hope all of this doesn't ruin your day KlineD.

WTH??? Someone is confused here. Maybe me. Prolly knot.
- Maxtor has two D740X series: one w/ fluid bearings, one w/o.
- A -second- "L" tag denotes the fluid bearings: ref the Maxtor datasheet

I examined these ST drives at Staples: I saw nothing on the outside indicating they were really the D740X6L040J you describe. I'm willing to believe you opened a package and found that marking on the drive. That said:
- You listed a *J2 drive: this is a BB (Ball Bearing) unit, not FB [Fluid Bearing] as you wrote, or I don't understand Maxtor's tech notes; the comparable Fluid bearing drive would be D740X6L040L2

So, one or more of us are confused on this.

And, yes, both J's and L's are alledged to be ATA-133's, not 66's or 100's -- as if 133 matters a fly turd.

Well, I hope no one's day is ruined... even if they thought they were getting FBD's.J

I'll float my bearings for $97 at nova ova I guess.

Nice Deal , I just bought a 20 gig for 70 bucks shipped a couple weeks ago , for a lady at works PC . I fired up the thing and loaded WIN 98 on it . Had it running and slapped the ATI CD in for her Radeon and it locks up . I hold the power button to shut it off ... fire back up and it can't detect the Maxtor anymore

Stick a 2 gig old drive on it and it detects it right away but the Maxtor is part of history . Take it back to the B&M (even though Staples delivered it) and they exchange it with no problems . Hook it up + install WIN98 and it works great . She has been happy with her new PC for weeks now .
Im guessing the drive musta got kick-punted a few times during delivery and it got FUBAR'd .
Nice and quiet though , comes with the proper cables and all (for those who have never bought PC parts) .
If I needed more than the 15 gigs Im sitting on Id buy this one . Funny how when your first PC had a 2 gig HD in it you can use a 15 gig and have it only half full

Yknot, you are right. It is a ball bearing rather than fluid bearing. I misread the spec sheet. Too many "L's" in the number. As for the number I listed, it came straight from the nameplate on the drive. Thanks for correcting me.

2 gigs? My first computer I had was decked out when I had the tape drive (as in cassette tape) for storage space. You could tape programs off of the radio to play on the computer. 16k of memory on that bad boy

My first PC I upgraded significantly to get a 120 MB drive

Question: Would BestBuy.com PM Staples.com for this deal? I have a $50 GC from Christmas I would like to use, but BB offers this @ $129.99.

Thanks.

I can only find one active 20 off 100 coupon out there, can anyone PM me with two working codes?

Also, how much quieter or more durable are the liquid bearing drives?

I need to buy two drives to do clean installs in two comps without wiping the existing drives (will slave them). Space is less of an issue than quality, quiet, and 7200 RPM.

Right now I'm torn between 2 of these 40s at 80 each or 2 20 GB quiet liquid OEM drives from newegg at 76 each shipped (also ordering other stuff so shipping could drop a hair). Decisions, decisions.

Thanks,
KF

I live in Indiana and they hit me with sales tax too. I suspect that they charge sales tax in every state that they have a retail presence, which is about everywhere.

I ordered this drive yesterday to replace my IBM 40 gig that died on me in less than a year. Crappy IBM drive. Today I received the drive and upon checking, it's Maxtor D740X-6L. ATA133 but not Fluid Bearing. Still, it's good deal for the retail version of this drive. This price is cheaper than the price Newegg is charging for the OEM version of this drive which I was about to order. So thanks for the heads up on this deal. I even needed the box of paperclip.
