Ok here is the offical story on Fry's in Chicagoland....

My father is on the zoning commission of Downers Grove, they decide who can have what kind of parking, what kind of access ways, how far your store must be from the street, ect. At one of the two last meetings (within the last month) he came back and said that there was petition for some tax or other breaks from the village, so that Fry's could move into the Auto Nation on Finley and Butterfield right up alongside I-355 (for people coming from else where, 1 minuet from the I-88 Highland Ave exit). My family has been to Fry's in San Diego and was truely in awe when we were there.... A place that was as big or bigger than Sam's Club but 80% computers, 20% other electronics!! Needless to say, the zoning commision recomended that the provisions be made (I'm not sure what they were) so FRY's can move in.

There has been no timetable set for them moving in, and I'm not sure they bought the building/lot yet. My guess is for an operation as large as they are they checking for the proper provisions from the local government first, and now are negociating for the property. My guess, and what I would want if I were them, is that they could be open by Thanksgiving, so they rake it in on chirstmas sales. If I here any updates I will pass them along in this thread, or if I get hard dates for opening, ect I will start a new thread.

I do feel kinda sorry for CompUSA and BestBuy right there though, it will be tough to compete

Oh I missed Chicago suburb so much!! Use to live around Downers Grove area and work for Best Buy on Butterfield Road. It's much better area than Boston area. The only Staple I know is in Champaign.

Didn't know so many Anandtecher were from there. We might need a block party just for Chicago Anandtecher someday.

Bought a 8 bay case from micronet for $19 (I had them remove the power supply because it was 250 watt unknown). It has 4 5.25 and 4 3.5, both sides are removable and the motherboard tray removes as well. The tray is a breeze to install a new motherboard on and then just slide it in place.

..Yea sometimes you can do pretty good at the computer show too, couple weeks ago they were in Tinley Park and I picked up a 128 Micron for 28 bucks..You just gota know your prices, lota of the stuff you can do better on and then you can find some real good deals..I got 50 ft. of Cat5 cable with connecttors for 11 bucks, havn,t priced the stuff but that seemed reasonable..

How often and where do these computer shows happen? I live near OHare and Tinley park is quite a drive for me. Does anybody have a website that shows dates and times of these computer show events? Preferably those in the Rosemont Convention Center.

It's funny how this thread turned into a Fry's in Chicago thread. I think it would be great. Then we could finally PM with them and get the prices really low. BB PM, but only with local stores. I think we need a Staples in the Chicago area too. That would be killer.

Computer Central Shows - Chicago

Got a used/pulled from system IBM Deskstar 75GXP (DTLA-307015) 15.3 GB/7200/ATA100 for $10 and it works!!!

I usually go to the Orland Park (2 blocks away) and the Tinley Park shows. See you there!!!

There's a Fry's near my hood. Don't go there very often because their deals are barely lukewarm.

The one thing they're good for is their return policy. Buy something, check it out, and then return.

A lot of folks must be doing this because half their inventory has been resealed.
