This is an odd deal, but figured I'd post anyway. If your a member of Netflix and go to cancel your membership they will offer you a deal to stay. $15.99 a month for 6 months. Here are the fine lines:
* Remain a Netflix customer for the next six months.
* At the end of six months, your Netflix subscription will return to the regular price.
* If you cancel before the six months are over, you will be charged the difference between your regular subscription price and the discounted rate, but only for the number of months you've enjoyed the discount.
So it can't hurt to do it. I'm personally still canceling because Blockbuster is $14.99 a month and gives 2 free in store rentals a month.
I've been using Blockbuster and Netflix for the last 3 weeks to compare the differences and besides Netflix's website being a lot better I'd have to say Blockbuster seems to have faster shipping times. Here's some information on each to help you decide. I'm right outside of Boston, MA, so the comments about shipping times may differ for you.
Netflix:
- Website is very nice. They have previews for most newer movies (2004 and beyond). Website if easier to search and find what your looking for.
- Profile feature that could be very useful for family's. You can configure different profiles for family members and each person can manage their own rental queue, you just tell Netflix how many movies each profile can have out at one time.
- Friends list that your friends who use netflix can recommend movies they like to you.
Blockbuster
- Open Saturday's. I sent a movie to them on a Friday morning and they recieved it Saturday and sent another movie out the same day. Netflix is closed on the weekends so with them the movie wouldn't ship out until Monday.
- Shipping times are very fast. I've put a movie in the mailbox at 5pm, blockbuster recieved it the next morning, and I had a replacement movie the next day (less than 2 business days to get the movie).
- Website isn't very good, but they will probably work on inproving. Many older movies don't have pictures or much information on them. They list FS and WS seperately so when doing a search many times you'll find 2 movies (one FS, one WS) which may be nice but is also a pain if you use the rating feature to remind yourself you've already seen the movie like I do (you'll have to rate both).
- When a movie has been shipped to you and you do a search it doesn't show as in your queue so you may end up adding it to your queue a second time without realizing it.
- Cost is $14.99 a month for 3 movies out at one time with 2 free instore rentals per month. Netflix is $17.99 a month for 3 movies out at one time.
Overall, I like Blockbuster better. Both Netflix and Blockbuster have warehouses in Worcester, MA so the shipping times are basically identical. Your experience may vary in different locations.
Edit: If you want to include your experiences with either Blockbuster or Netflix I will add them to the list above.
