OfficeMax.com is selling the Brother HL-1440 laser printer for:

$299.98
(- $50 (instant rebate) <-- EXPIRED )
- $50 gift card after MIR
- $50 off $250 coupon for new customers (expires 1/6)
- 3% ebates (Thanks Rossman!)
= ~$244 + tax, shipped (free shipping for orders over $50), and you get a $50 gift card back after MIR.

Not as hot as the previous deal of $167 for this printer at Microcenter's 22nd aniversary, when they had a 22% off sale + $50 instant rebate + 20% off coupon in the ComputerUser magazine.

I have this printer and I've been extremely pleased with it so far. Very low printing cost (1.6 cent/page, as opposed to 2.1 cent/page for most other laser printers in its class, like the Samsung ML-1250, HP 1000/1200se, Lexmark Optra E312L). Very good resolution - max 1200x600dpi (you need probably another 16MB memory to achieve this resolution, costs about $15 at crucial.com). Great printing speed - 15 ppm max. Supports manual 2-sided printing, 2in1 printing. IMHO, the print-outs from my Brother HL-1440 easily beat the ones from the high end HP laser printer I use at work, which cost at least 10 or 15 times more I'm sure.

This printer supports both parallel and USB interface. Drivers available for Mac OS (8.5.1 and above), Windows 95/98/Me/NT4.0/2000, and Windows XP also.

Thanks to DonBlack for noticing this excellent deal!

Edit 12/17: OfficeMax removed the $50 instant rebate sometime this morning (Monday 12/17) I believe, which turns this deal from flaming hot to warm or even cool. The total cost is now $244 with a $50 gift card after MIR. If it was me, I'd wait for the next deal because it seems that deals on this printer happen pretty frequently, most of the time bringing the price down to $199 or lower, without MIR.

yeah, this is actually the same thing i did a short while ago. gotta say it's a damned nice printer, just needs extra memory (32mb simm at crucial for $25) to make it great, that 2mb crap just doesn't cut it.

Actually it would be:

$249.98 at OM
-$50 off $250 coupon
-3% eBates.com
-free shipping
+tax
=======================================
$193.98 shipped

A great price for one of the best laser printers for light home/office use!

I've purchased a couple for desktop lasers here in the office and they've been very solid performers. And the price keeps dropping, so that's a good thing.

<< just needs extra memory (32mb simm at crucial for $25) to make it great >>

You just have to watch out and ensure the dimensions of the SIMM isn't too tall. I purchased a 32 MB memory module that was too tall for the small area to install the memory. I had to return the 32 MB moduled and pick up a 16 MB module - which is still a nice amount of memory for this printer.

Another way at looking at this for people who already bought this printer but want to get another one: New drum $130, new toner cartridge $40. That's $170 in consumables you would need to spend. Bump up a few more dollars to have your empty shell "insurance" in case something goes wrong with your existing brother printer.

Replacing the drum separately from replacing the toner cartridge is actually a cost-saving *advantage* of this printer rather than a disadvantage. Other laser printers replace the drum and the toner together in the same cartridge. What that means is you're replacing a drum that can probably lasts for 20,000 pages at the frequency that the toner is running out, which is usually 3,000 or 6,000 pages. So you're actually replacing the drum more often than necessary.

Here's a detailed analysis of the printing cost of the Brother HL-1440, when compared to other laser printers in its class. (This is taken from an earlier thread where I posted this information). You can see that the Brother HL-1440 has the absolute *lowest* printing cost per page than any of its competitors:

Brother HL-1440
Drum (DR400) - $103.95 at buy.com
6000-page toner (TN460) - $56.95 at buy.com
For the first 20,000 pages, you can use the original drum, therefore price/page = $56.95/6000
= ~1 cent/page
After 20,000 pages, price/page = 1 cent + $104/20000 = ~1.5 cent/page

(Edit 12/18: Updated with lower price of drum at buy.com.)

HP 1000 / 1200se
2500-page toner (C7115A) - $54 at buy.com
price/page = $54/2500 = ~2.2 cents/page

Lexmark E312L
6000-page toner (13T0101) - $124 at buy.com
price/page = $124 / 6000 = 2.1 cents/page

Lexmark E210
2000-page toner (10S0150) - $81 at buy.com
price/page = $81 / 2000 = 4 cents/page

Samsung ML-1250
3000-page toner (ML-1210D3) - $62 at buy.com
price/page = $62 / 3000 = 2.1 cents/page

In particular, note how the Lexmark E210 printer sells cheap for $199 but they really rob you when it comes to toner cartridge. 4 cents/page is ridiculous. Photocopy at Kinko's is just 5 cents/page. Gimme a break...

So the brother HL-1440 is still the cheapest in terms of printing cost. For the first 20,000 pages, it's 1 cent/page. Everything after that, it's 1.6 cent/page.

I just picked up the E210 and did the pros and cons of the printer. I have a BJC-6000 and I believe the ink cost on it is much more per page. I also got the E210 for $35 (guy also threw in a 2-year protection program) after using a gift check, dividens, coupons, PM and I couldn't get my desired ML-1210/1250 for a similar or closer price (staples didn't carry it *sigh*). As for the toner, I can probably pick it up for cheaper (making the costs per page lower) and I don't print much so I think this printer is worthwhile. The prints are very good for it's price so overall it's worth it, so don't dis my printer.

Darn, I wish I hadn't used up my first timer coupon on the purchase of that RCA CDS 6300 digital camera which I fianlly came last week and I am returning today. I guess I can ask a freind to be a first timer. As for the Microcenter deal, for some reason they never emailed me about it even though I am regular customer.. I should have been watching this thread then.

*BUMP / UPDATE*

This printer is back to $249.98 plus has an additional mail-in rebate of $50. Use the $50 off $250 and you can pickup this printer now for $150 + tax. I'm actually glad I missed this deal the last time around now!

You might want to change the topic and bump it up to flaming.

Think I might give my current Brother HL-1240 to my sister and buy this for myself.

Too tempting to resist esp for only $149.

Okay...as usual, I'm a little slow on the draw. I can see the $50 rebate but where's the additional 2nd $50 off coming from? The above coupon has expired. OfficeMax states there's a $50 instant rebate but that's not coming up either. What gives?

There's another $50 off $250 coupon floating around out there... and the instant rebate is already factored into the price at $249.98.

Hey guys! Thanks for the post. Added some paper clips and took off 50 off 250 for a 216 total with tax. Take off another 6.50 for eBates and the 50 Gift card makes this printer a total of 160 shipped!
My sister has been looking at the Brother Laser printer for a while (she liked the previous one she owned, the 1250 I think). Just waiting for a deal like this one.

Shippy: Yes, well of course you can but that would be fraud and that's the reason we can't post coupon codes here to begin with. :|

we purchased this printer back in October for something like 250 and it's still werth every penny! The thing is sooooooo FAST! It prints FASTER than an HP4000! The RAM upgrade was EASY too...I just pulled a 16Mb SIMM outta one of the old Pentium RedHat boxes I had laying around and now we got 18Mb of RAM in a LASER printer (10Mb more than the 1450 which only an IDIOT would buy!) Man...a printer like this 2-4 years ago probably would have cost around a grand? right? I dunno...I jus know that I LOVE this thing!

props to docinthebox! d00d...that was some serious math heheheh...i did a little of that myself on the ol' MtDew thread hehehe

NEwayZ,

I hope that Uall have a Gr8 time w/ this printer! My wife has printed off something like 500+ pages in the past two months for her Bachelors...this thing prints sooooooooooo friggin' fast! LOVIN' it!
