Great printer! Looks like I could have waited a bit longer and saved another $50 on this one

I jumped on this one this morning. I had been looking for a Laser Printer for all the shipping labels I want to print. My final cost was $208 after I picked up a $5 stapler to bump it over $250. Once I receive the $50 gift card, my final tally will be $158. Not bad, but not a MIR. I guess I could try and move a gift card for cash, but I'll probably need some toner for this printer as well.

before i jump on this, i have a question about the gift card. does NE one know whether it can be used online or not? if the gift card can only be used at a b&m OM, i'm screwed. the closest one is about 65 miles away. just the time spent getting there and back will be worth more trouble than the $50 is worth.

Question: Who sells the cheapest but highest quality RAM for this printer?

I'm wondering if I even need additional RAM. My current Brother HL-1240 has the factory installed (2MB?) and it's worked fine for me, if I print something in high res it takes about 1-2 minutes to spool/think/churn it out but I don't mind waiting. I only print about 10 pages a week and that's a busy week.

So I guess I don't need additional RAM, unless 16MB or 32MB is dirt cheap (under $30 shipped) and easy to install?

Thanks kanate, two more questions:
1) Considering I print an average of 10 pages a week, with my largest print job around 4 regular text pages ... do I even need to spend $15 on 16MB RAM?
2) How easy/difficult is the RAM to install? What steps does it take?

FatDragonn,

In response to your question...

"gift card...be used online or not?"

I have called OfficeMax and explained that I had a Gift Card that I want to use on an online purchase.
Although they normally don't do that, she ask her manager and was allowed to accept my gift card for my purchase.

She was also able to accept my coupon. (25 OFF 100)

Should not be a problem but call the order in.

read this User's Manual. It's PDF file, might takes time to load.

You will need at least 10MB Ram on this printer to do 1200dpi.
300 dpi and 600dpi only need 2 MB built-in Ram

Rossman,

I will answer each in turn.

1.) You will need at least 10 MB total to print in 1200x600 dpi. According to the manual, you can't print at that res without it. I bought a stick from crucial. I went the MAX route and bought a 32MB module for $26 something shipped.

2.) Unplug the printer, and the cable to PC (USB or Parallel). On back side there is a little door (2 philips head screws) remove screws and panel (you can now see the socket) and just place stick in at angle and then stand it upright into the socket locking it in place. replace the panel and screws and plug everything back on. power on printer and print a config sheet and make sure it lists n + 2MB where n = number MB you purchased.

My first stick from crucial was a dud. it only registered 16 of the 32 MB.

GL,

Shiz

updating ram on this baby is a piece of cake...just pop the metallic door open behind the priter and plug the ram in as you would with any desktop ...nothing more ! just print the printer settings page to make sure it shows up.

Hmmn thanks for the replies. If I get this printer, it sounds like buying additional RAM is a no brainer.

IMHO, besides achieving 1200x600dpi resolution, adding additional RAM also allows you to print at the 15ppm max speed, and minimizes system interrupts to your PC (which might not be too noticeable if you have a fast enough PC, but on a slow PC you probably would notice it). With 2MB buffer, the printer has to interrupt the PC every time it finishes printing a 2MB chunk, to get the printer driver to send it more data. This is especially relevant when you're printing documents with many pages, or graphics intensive documents.

By the way, FYI... the rebate for this deal is processed by Young America which is the best/fastest rebate processor out there, which makes this deal even hotter.

Should the $50 off coupon show up before or after you complete the purchase?

I get to the verify order page and my total is:

Subtotal: $299.98
Discount: $50.00
Tax: $14.37
Delivery: $0.00
Grand Total: $264.35

I've cleared all my cookies and I am a real 1st time customer

I'm getting this to replace my old HL-1040 which regularly gets a full case (at least) of paper pumped through it every month.

Keep trying in the following days, I did a post to remind people of the 50 dollars off and it turned out the instant rebate had been taken off only to find out it came back few days later only to go away.

esquared - I think I'm a little under the weather, plus I haven't spent as much time in Hot Deals lately as I used to.

Yes, I have finally realized that I gotta start saving money and one way of doing that is to AVOID my urges to surf AT/FW/DVDTalk for hours on end ... even if I were a millionaire I'd still be a tight assed Ferengi.

Deal's dead. Someone need to update the header of this post. Glad I got my order in last night. Time to put those 16 MB SIMMs to use. Too bad it only has one slot. My 4 sticks of 16MB Simm has been collecting dust in the closet for the past years. Glad I didn't get rid of them. I even have some 4MB and 1MB Simms that I paid over $25/MB back in the early 90s. Maybe I'll get my money's worth out of them after all! hehehe.

I meant to say that the deal is now back to about $250 for the printer + a $50 OM gift certif. By the way, does anyone know if we can use EDO SIMMs instead of FPM ? I have some 16MB EDO and 4MB FPM sticks that I can try ...when my printer will be here in 2 days from now.
