Just ran accross this,

Link

they seem to have some good deals on AMD processors.

$98 shipped for and OEM barton 2500 and for $104 you can get the
retail. Seems like a good deal to me.

Checked those resellerrattings and seems like a legit company to me.

Best price I've seen so far.

The retails are $104, but are out of stock.

I've got a Compaq, 750MHz Duron. I'd really like to upgrade the motherboard & CPU. Do you know of any website which would educate me on what to look for in a mainboard? CPUs are pretty easy to figure out, but I'm lost when it comes to mainboards. I'm not a gamer, or power user, but I want a fast, stable system. Most intense work is photo editing and some video editing, but not enough to warrant a dedicated video editing setup.

I've never ventured outside the hot deals forum....where do I look at anandtech?

I did build a sweet machine for my mom from AT deals a few months ago. but it was a shot in the dark as far as what I was getting into for a mother board. For my own machine, I want to make sure I get the best value.

You should see my mom. She's almost 70 years old and had a 4GB hard drive. When she got it half full, she started freaking out, worried she was going to run out of space. Good lord mom, relax! Anyway, she finally decided to buy a new PC. What she was looking at (or more accurately, what the Best Buy dood told her to buy) was about $1400. I built her a better machine for under $400, using AT deals and scavenging her old PC. She about crapped her pants when she saw she had over 72GB free on her 80GB hard drive. (note to self: bring over Depends next time I visit mom). She's one happy lady now, I tell ya. I made the mistake of putting Photoshop elements on her machine now, and now she's lost trying to figure out how to tweak old geneology photos. I have to say one thing about mom though, she's not afraid to get in there and try stuff out on the PC. I've bailed her butt out a few times! Finally had to put VNC on her machine so I can remotely fix her screwups. Now the next project is to get her on DSL so I can fix them faster.

but I digress.....

just hop on over to the hardware forum, and people there can help you out. To get there, just delete the 40 and add 27 from the http://[thppft]

Or www.anandtech.com, and look in some of the CPU or motherboard articles. Too bad the buyer's guides are <ahem> not regularly updated

The long and the short of it is as such: if you're going to stay AMD, you'll want a CPU of your choice and an nforce-2 based motherboard.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I plan on staying AMD. Sounds like I have to find out what a Barton Core is and why it's good. Any suggestions for a low cost board with onboard sound? I suppose I should take this over to the hardware forum. I'm getting the bug to build one!

You mention nforce-2. Is the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe a good one?

thanks!

nForce2 chipset 8RDA+ for $89 with free shipping

People report getting AXDA1700DUT3C for $42 here.

$9.99 for a nice heatsink here.
Although $19.99 SK-7 is usually a better bet performance wise.

Put thermal paste like Arctic Alumina carefully on heatsink where it would be touching the CPU. With a smooth plastic knife transfer it on the CPU. Spread it evenly with a plastic knife. Not too much. A fine coat over the CPU. Rub in and wipe Alumina completely from the heatsink.

Be sure you have fans on your case and a good power supply.

Increasing FSB will allow you to push this 1700+ into the 2700+ range without too much trouble.

I just bought a 1700+ for $50 which runs perfect at 2400+ speed.

Recently I have done lots of video editing with Adobe Premiere and I am wondering if the extra cache will speed up the rendering and encoding of video. I suspect it would, but is it worth upgrading so soon.

Several years ago I was using Premiere 4.2 on a Pentium (1) 200mhz. It was the fastest machine around at the time. Anyhow I had a slightly complex composite going and when I went to render it said" Estimated time, about a day" cracked me up because I hadent ever seen that before. Not 24 hours, about a day.

I'm not in a hurry to upgrade. It should continue to drop, right?

I don't think it'll go lower, not until Prescott hits the streets. However, I'd like to be proven wrong

Ususally you go to the mobo manufacturers official web site and they hav something like this for example, in case of SOYO:
http://www.soyousa.com/kb/kbdesc.php?id=16

If you don't know who the mobo manufacturer is, the info you have tells you it's a VIA KM266 8235 chipset.
Find out if other mobos based on this chipset take Barton.
