Maybe all right. Looking at the Newegg reviews, looks like the latest ones are not all the best steppings, like a few months ago. If you have to have a socket 939, maybe still the best bet. I'm still using my Newegg Opteron 165 I got in December, overclocked to 2.7GHz right now. I just read here in the CPU forum that Intel should be having their price cuts next month, like the E6600 for 224.00, or the E4400 for 133.00.That?s incredible pricing if true. Might be better to go that route.

E6600 for $224 would be HOT. I took my $222 E6400 (bought at newegg about a month ago) to 3.4GHz under 50C full load. I'm loving it.

To be more on-topicish, I took a CCBBE 0617 to 2.6GHz on stock voltage and 2.7GHz with 1.42v.

Sticking with 939 for a while longer here. Wish I saw this before I ordered the 3800+ x2 939 OEM from them last week. LOL oh well.

I sold my "spare" Opteron 165, CCBBE that was in a factory sealed box on Ebay for 170.00 delivered. The buyer was so happy, he reported back that he was at 3GHz using H2O. He got a good deal on it.

I got one of these a few weeks ago. True, I didn't get the super stepping, but I'm still at 2.57Ghz without messing with the memory at all.

Seems to be a nice upgrade to stick with the 939 for another year or so. I'm always a few years behind the curve.

There was a review where the dude said that AMD was rebadging regular X2 as Opterons. I can't believe that they would do that. Can they even change the multiplier after it's been made?

They'd have to be rebadging a much higher end X2 to do that as the Opteron comes with twice the cache as say..the X2 3800+.

I doubt they'd be doing that.

Anyone think 2x1mb 939 chips will hit $130 shipped? I'm holding out for that!

The X2 4400+ and X2 4800+ are dual 1MB cache CPU and could be relabeled as Opterons if desired.

My 165 has been running 2.7 @ 1.45v for quite some time. Been a great cpu although I'm thinking about an E6600 if the price drops <250.

Dude is an idiot.

a) text is lasered on so they would have to remove all the heat spreader which are epoxied on and replace with new - cost = higher than chips are to make.

b) have to change CPUID = more time

c) most x2's have 512MB cache per core - all 1xx opteron have 1024 cache per core - impossible to change low into high

d) Opterons are still clocking sky high while X2's less so.

e) multipliers are physically cut forever = no chage possible. Lots of very smart people have tried.

All these changes AMD did is so black market couldn't rebadge lessor chips and sell them as high end chips. Not profitable any more. AMD certainly wouldn't do it. Not to mention the whole dishonesty part.

I don't recommend the 165 multi too low only certain motherboards can use this chip to it's potential. The 3800+ is a much better deal for $120..so is the opty 170.

I agree. I didn't know about all the stuff that Zebo mentioned earlier. However, my issue was the the core. This is the Denmark core. I'm not sure if I'm using the phrase "core" correctly, but if AMD rebadge X2s, then the rebadged Opteron would not be a Denmark. Can someone confirm my assessment? I want to be sure before I start to tell people lies.

You're assuming that a Denmark core Socket 939 Opteron is actually a different piece of silicon than a Toledo X2. I don't believe that anyone has ever conclusively proved that there is a difference between the two other than the CPU-ID value. Nor would it make much sense for AMD to produce seperate lines for the models. The difference is far more likely to be in the amount of testing and validation the chips receive.

I guess what I am trying to say, is that it's not really possible for AMD to "rebadge" a chip. It's way more likely that they had a relatively poor clocking batch or that they are binning them closer to tolerances due to high demand for their chips.

its tough to decide between this and the X2 3800+ oem for $119.00 shipped from newegg right now.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103561

for me it is a nobrainer to go for the X2 3800+ because i already have a XP-120 heatsink and 120MM fan.

but if you need a heatsink, and value the 3 year warranty, and like the 1mb cache per core, and plan on keeping the set-up longer the Opty 165 might be a better deal for ya.
