Last July I signed up for the $39.99/month package from SBC, it was spec'ed at 768-1500kbps DL and 256kbps UL.

I tested at 1.2 Mbps DL and 220 kbps UL from dslreports.com.

I then recently upgraded to the "Pro" package for the same $39.99 but is spec'ed at 1.5-3.0 Mbps DL and 384kbps UL.

I now test at 2.4 Mbps DL and 360 kbps UL. Not a bad upgrade for same price. You can change packages anytime, up or down in price as long as you recommet for one more year. Just an FYI for those with SBC Yahoo.

I just looked into DSL, and found that DSLExtreme was a much better option than SBC.

For $49.99 a month with a guaranteed price freeze, they are offering the same speeds, but you can get 2 static IP's.

And for $10 a month more, it's definitely worth it to me to NOT have to deal with SBC customer service...

Well, it's now one of about 80% of the useless post in this forum. Grats me. Back to "Free condom" threads I guess.

I tried upgrading to the pro package but the guy wouldn't let me have it for $40 a month, only $45 so I declined. Currently paying $40 for around 1.2/300 speeds. =/

upload is very expensive. 1.5/768 is 49.95 a month plus 99.95 activation fee, isp like cyberonic.
I want 3200/832 for 44.95 a month
hell, if your download exceeds 768kbps, you're more then qualify for 832k upload since they are symmetrical but ASDL isn't.

Just depends on your area. I know some areas where Comcast sucks. In others it rocks. It was awesome in my area. I always got 3000/256 speeds, but I switched to SBC DSL and 1500/256. Why? Price. I was paying $43 for 3000/256 and I get 1500/256 for $27. I get about the same in terms of latency and ping times, which is the 30-40 range for close servers. I considered jumping on the $40 deal, but I just don't need the extra speed.

SBC is a very valid option for a lot of people.

Yeah, I'd say March was the time to jump-- just tested at DSL reports, and I'm at 4307 down, 450 up for $45 a month.

Like Nightfall said, it depends on your area. Charter has capped all their levels to 128K up in my area, I get 256K up with DSL, that helps with gaming and Bit Torrent. That and it's $10 more for the same download speed (at the time I got it anyway, they've since up'ed the speed).

Yep same here. $45 a month for 6000/608 service. Thanks for mentioning my thread
I just ran a test and I get
Download = 5.006 Mbps
Upload = 516.72 kbps
http://support.sbcglobal.net/cgi-bin/speedtest/speedresult.cgi?5006014;516729;1;2.0;speedtest-snfcca.snfcca.sbcglobal.net

As for cable vs DSL. I prefer DSL, garunteed speed. Cable can slow down if you share with too many ppl in same neighborhood. Just depends though. Sometimes you get faster with cable, sometimes faster with DSL. Also depends if download or upload is more important. They can vary as well. And vary by neighborhood.

And speaking of service. Yes the phone support is kinda sucky. BUT if you use the official SBC techs on the dslreports/broadbandreports forums, you can get near instant service. My upgrade was a couple days overdue, I contacted a tech there, and 15 mins later it was fixed. You cant get that kinda service anywhere else I dont think

To get details on all the packages sbc offers in your area, goto sbc.com and pick residential, then dsl. Then pick state or type in area code to see packages.

BTW, to the poster of this topic, you may want to edit the title to read the speed you get for $40 a month right now. I think its 3000/384

"spec'ed at 1.5-3.0 Mbps DL and 384kbps UL" <- correct according to the webpage.

All I can say is be very careful with DSL Extreme. My mom had a 2 month nightmare with them. She never once was connected. She spent over 20 hours with them on the phone. SBC came to look at the phone line 3 times to make sure it was ok and it was. When she said see was fed up with them and wanted out they said hold on let me transfer you to someone else that can help. blah blah blah. I had to call the local radio station (KFI 640 AM) that they advertise on. I tasked to the sales manager and told him the horror story that she had. He said that she will be contacted with the hour and will be canceled and apologized to. About 1 hour later one of the high ups called her and said they were very sorry and finally canceled her so she could go to SBC. SBC had her connect in less then 5 minutes.

NEVER USE DSLEXTREME. Do a google search for DSL Extreme if you look you will see some horror stories. BBB has one there also. My mom will be adding hers soon
