KV-34XBR800for 1979$ + shipping, MSRP is 3,000$ even though no one would ever pay that of course.

Many of us are fence sitting on this digital TV issue about whether to go plasma or DLP like the thread I posted a while back or PLASMA or whatever.
By and large direct view tv's are cheaper in some ways better than plasma or as good , but this set in incredible I viewed it with HDTV about a month ago.

I picked up a Toshiba 43h81 a while back and it was the best then, BUT now Sony has released this cheaper version of the 34 digital widescreen tube set. The big difference is it doesn't have the built-in HDTV tuner. Since may people have tuners, or some type of HDTV cable, though I hear DirecTv only has a few channels at that res or like it for DVD's or other digital sources.

ANYWAY, this set has been getting huge amounts of rave comments everywhere for month now but almost no one seems to know its been released. Last I checked it wasn't even on Sony's site for some reason. I heard it was because they wanted people to buy the version with HDTV the tuner for 1400$ more or whatever price you find it at it.

IT HAS A DVI connector for the future if needed.

The new HD-DVD standards and the already appoved HD-VHS standards use it. HD-VHS , created by JVC just like S-VHS and VHS years ago has been in use by studio's for a year now. The tapes store like 30-40 gig ( I am approximating) of HD res for a single movie.

***********
A gem about this site is you can turn on and off some of the video processing on different modes of display so it doesnt add artifacts , in the different types of HDTV signal or for feeding it conventional satellite or cable, according to the dealers.
I know THAT appeals to me and MANY people a great deal.

************

I have personally checked it out, its stunning, probably the best direct view at this size, it is every bit as good as the one with the HDTV tuner built in that they charge a fortune more on.

The only bad thing is the shipping is like 260%$ or so, but since you would have to pay tax this is still a VERY good price for a set of the top notch caliber with all the video mode options and the DVI connector.

I just read an article which said that there are two things a supposed HDTV should absolutely have before you spend one penny. First it should be 16 X 9 format, which is the standard for HDTV. Second it should include the HDTV decoder built in. Until you can afford a TV that has this, you are just buying a bogus "compatible" HDTV.

Actually, SimMike2, you don't get all the sources of an HDTV signals into a set from broadcast so thats not quite true.

The real issue, which either you didn't mention or the article didn't mention has been the long running argument over whether firewire or a DVI input is the choice to be put into all the sets for HDTV. The FCC has gotten involved due to all the wrangling and delays and they have actually set a timetable with costs on the hdtv tuners that are built into sets if you get a set with one integrated into it, to be slowly scaled down on these new sets.

Specifically these tuners don't really cost 1000$ or more to put into a set, or even 700$. You can buy them at Best Buy and other places for as little as 300$ on sale or 500$ on average and even that is coming down.

There are several thousand web pages devoted to these specific topics on the net and the Wall Street Journal has had length articles on on it as well.

IF you want to wait , of course the prices come down as always, but this is a hot deal now that exists.

If JandR.com ever carries this, you can pricematch it there. They carry the Sony 36" XBR Model KV-36XBR800 FD for $1999.98 plus shipping.

I'd agree with 16:9, but not with built-in tuner. Best way to get a OTA tuner would be to buy either a DirecTV or a dish network HDTV receiver. They come with built-in OTA tuner and you can watch Showtime, HBO and discovery on HD. DirecTV has HDNet too.

Most articles in popular press are very outdated (and are similar to color tv bashing articles found during b&w to color transition years). For accurate information on HDTV related matter see AVScience HDTV Forums . Infact, I'd say, don't buy any HD hardware without reading forums.

Cheapest (and quality-wise "best") way to get HD is to buy an old CRT projector, if you have space and don't mind spending time converging. For less than $1000 you can get a really good projector.
