Just got a mailing today from SBC, concerning dsl. While it doesn't give the $26.95/month price recently given, it makes up for that with a freebie that should be worth the extra $3 a month. Check out the deal here.

Sign up for 12 months at $29.95 a month, and you'll receive your choice of a either an RCA Lyra Pocket MP3 player (64mb storage, runs on 2 AAA batteries, looks like an older model, since that's all the info I could find on it) or a Logitech pocket digital camera (1.3 megapixel quality, onboard storage holds up to 52 images, tho probably 1/3 that amount at the 640x480 resolution that I believe you get with 1.3 mp). Plus, you get the free dsl modem, free activation, and free self-installation kit, plus the $10 in movielink money and 10 musicnow music downloads.

Of course, if you don't need a cheap digital camera or mp3 player, the $26.95 a month deal is the better choice. I figure either of the freebies has a retail value of about $50 or so, which is more than the $36 extra you'll spend ($3/month, times 12 months).

Could make for a cheap Christmas present, tho!

I've been thinking of switching to sbc. right now I get static ip dsl from a local isp that uses sbc's lines.
is there any disadvantage in dynamic PPPoE instead of static, besides that it's worse for hosting anything?

I actually signed up for SBC dsl yesterday and just to clarify the $26.95 is only if you decide to sign up for their unlimited long distance plan for your phone, otherwise it is the $29.95

Another thing I found kinda nice other than the free modem is that you can get a faster download speed for the same price. 384kbits -1.5Mbits as opposed to up to 384kbits.

I went through dslextreme you is a reseller of sbc and I got the 1.5/256 for $30 a month on a 12 month contract. While it's not as fast as my previous carrier (whome doesn't offer service in the town I moved to) it's the best and cheapest I could find.

Dell seems to have a deal on DSL the last time I ordered a computer from them online they asked if I wasnted DSL and offered a rebate. I'm sorry I don't have more information. Perhaps someone else has more details.

Yes, go to www.dell4me.com/broadband and u should find it for the same price.. the twist here is that you get a $75 rebate cehck from DELL instead of the goodies here, might be good if someone needs the cash.. and do they sign u up for the long distance package? I dont remember reading that..

I live in the Bay Area and get pretty good service from SBC. My speeds are about 1300/220 and my pings are usually sub 30. The connection is pretty reliable and I don't see any big downside to using PPoE.

SBC sucks!
at least for me.
They cap mine to 300Kbps and even when I wanted to pay more, they couldn't give me more. But they still cap the speed (what's to loose by uncapping since they don't offer higher speed??? greedy bastards)

Signed up a year ago for 29.95. Loved it, hosted an email server, etc, no problems. Got an email last week from them saying its close to my one year anniversary, offered me the 26.95 renewal. I took it.

I've been happy with my SBC dsl in Madison - just this week my uploads got bumped to "up to 256kbps" (nominally getting about 210kbps), from 128kbps. Downloads are still "up to 1.5mbit" (around 1200 kbps nominal). I signed up for the 29.95 deal in August.

I've been happy with SBC (with the except that you have to have an SBC local phone to get their DSL service). I use the PPPoE function on my router along with dyndns.org. It must work well because this morning I got an email saying my dyndns.org account was going to expire since it hadn't updated in 30 days (meaning my router hadn't *needed* to update it in 30 days!). A manual refresh and I'm good for another 30 days

Thanks for providing the dell link!
Here's the deal for me.
Plan: SBC Yahoo! DSL
Package: Standard Plus Package
Interesting feature Included Features: Shipping and handling fee

$75 Back from Dell!
$26.95 per month for 12 months!
College Football Championship Promo!
MusicNow and MovieLink Promo*
They also charge $99 for the modem and then they give it back to you.

Doesn't seem like you need to get the long distance plan.

Here's something weird, that hopefully someone can give me an idea about.

When I checked SBC's website for dsl availability at my house, they tell me that I can get either the standard or standard plus package for $26.95 a month.
When I checked Dell's website (had to check out that $75 rebate, don'tcha know?), they tell me that I can only get the standard package from SBC, at $26.95 a month (no other packages available).
When my next door neighbor signed up for SBC dsl via the phone (yes, even after I told her to do it online) last week, SBC told her that only the standard package was available in this neighborhood, at the $26.95 a month price. When I told her about the standard plus package showing on SBC's website as available here, she called them back, and was told that it was NOT available!

I'm really starting to wonder if maybe it wouldn't be simpler just to call Time Warner cable, and just sign up with RoadRunner!!

Anyone have any idea why we're getting two different stories? I meant to call SBC myself today, and see what their story was, but didn't have the time. If all I can get is the standard package, I'd just as soon do it via Dell, to get the $75 rebate, if that's still available.

Thanks in advance for any answers/ideas provided!

It depends on your distance from the Central Office. If you are over 15,000 ft then they'll cap it so it'll work.

Ina:

How reliable is the service? I've had them for three years. Don't use the Enternet software they give you. Once I stopped that, they've been reliable. First I was on an unbundled loop, and now I'm sharing the service on the phone line. Having said that, Tuesday morning, the service went down from sometime in the night to around noontime for no explanation given us. I've not had a problem like that in the last six months. For $10/month more than dialup, why not?

Newsgroups? Abhorrent. Lousy. Crappy. Particularly for binaries. Text groups are OK, but the conventional wisdom is that you'll need to get a *real* news provider if you really want news.

More info Here for Ameritech (Midwest). You'll have to search in dslreports for your region.

Cheers,
Cran

From what I've read over at DSL Reports, if you want newsgroups go with DSL Extreme.
They are a reseller on the SBC DSL side. If you can get SBC, you can get DSL Extreme and it's only $29.99 a month. For the few extra bucks, it seems well worth it. I may switch from Comcast soon.

What is the advantage of DSL Extreme? Beside the fact that it is only 24.99 for first time users. And that they have a referral program.
One second. . .
Do you mean the 256kbps SuperNews Connection?
Question two. Do they send their own bill or do they bill you on your phone bill like SBC does?
Wait! here is the answer in their FAQ
Q. What is DSLExtreme's billing process?
A. DSLExtreme bills are due on or before the first of the month every month. For example, if you want service during May you must pay your monthly rate by May 1st. Because it is likely that you service will start on a day other than the first of the month, the initial invoice will be a pro-rated charge at the same monthly rate.
Q. Will I see additional charges on my phone bill?
A. No. DSLExtreme has no hidden fees. We charge you for the DSL circuit, the ISP service, and federal taxes in a single low monthly bill that is from us not the telephone company.

Q. What are the payment options for DSL service?
A.
1. Automatic Credit Card Billing - Charges automatically deducted at the beginning of the month from your Credit/Debit card.
2. Automatic E-Check - Automatic deduction fro your bank account. All we need is your bank account number and your bank's routing number or just send in a voided check.
3. Make Payments Online - If you want to continue to receive a paper statement in the mail, but want the ease of paying your bills online, you can make credit card payments online by going to www.dslextreme.com/access
You can always view or print your payments, invoices and current balance anytime by signing on to www.dslextreme.com/access

The reason I signed up with them is because they were the cheapest place I could find that offered the speed I wanted including SBC themselves. I found them originally on dslreports so I figured they had to be somewhat trust worthy and they had alot of positive feedback.

As far as the bill goes, I'm not sure how it works, I've only had service for a couple of weeks.
