Great deal on last years model. I picked up the newer 804 with an Amazon.com deal in August ($10 coupon and $30 rebate for final cost $46) and was networking my two pc's in no time at all. Not much difference between the two models, except 804 has rear connects while the 704 has front. I'm not sure if the 704 has the serial modem connector. I wish it had a shared printer port (some models do), but you can get aroung that with MS file and print sharing.

My only problem is I'm still wating on my rebate. It's been over three months, but it's an Amazon one, not a Dlink. Guess I'll call them Monday.

<< I jsut bought this router, I was shocked to see two rebates worth $50 on top of the price of 59.99
Best buy rebate form actually says *copy* of UPC., so I should be able to use both the rebates.

So a $100 router for $10, that is deal of the season...
>>

WOO-HOO! Just bought 2! A friend has been looking for one. They have have about 8 left at the Pico/Sawtelle BB in West LA...

Good deal! Confirmed the $9.99 deal in Chicago area. I was thinking about picking it up for $29, but 10 bucks is even better. It rang up as $59 with both $30 and $20 rebates.

LINK UPDATED: Sorry, I had a link to an older version of firmware. My box came with v. 2.56b19. Here is a link to the latest update (US site is not current, this is from the Taiwan site):

firmware 256b20

Link to DLink download page for 704

dlink discussion forum on dslreports.com

OT: I also returned the stupid free-after-MIR IBM webcam (with no "Registration card"). Not worth the trouble.

To connect more than 4 computers, you'll just have to use a CROSSOVER cable to connect to another hub/switch. It's as easy as that.
Not really a big deal, it is just nicer to not have to get a crossover cable..

When you are talking about rebate form coming with the receipt, do you mean you bought it at B&M or online? The online rebate both said you need "Original" UPC code for the rebates.

When you go to bestbuy to pick up your router, have them print out the REBATE RECEIPTS for you. I think this is where they say a copy of the UPC is allowed..

If you already have a router, just pick up a run of the mill hub and either connect them with a crossover cable or do what I did and pick up a hub that has crossover functionality.

As a general FYI to all, definitely update to the latest firmware. There's a bulletin which outlines a vulnerability where a DOS attack of fragmented IP packets will cause it to go offline with an older firmware,

When you add a hub with a crossover cable do you use the WAN port or a standard port? If you use the WAN port then where does your cable modem plug in to?

The wan port is for your cable/dsl connection only and is usually limited to 10mbps, so to add a hub or switch plug in to one of the 10/100 ports with a crossover to a hub/switch.

FYI, today I got the D-Link nic card that was free after rebate. It rang up $10, and then spit out a $10 and $5 rebate! Make $ on the nic card!

got my nic and router for :
nic : $10 - $10 rebate from d-link (original upc) - $5 rebate from bestbuy (copy upc) == make $5
router : $59.99 - $30 rebate from d-link (original upc) - $20 from bestbuy (copy upc) == $9.99 + tax
combine the profit you make from the nic you got both of the item for 4.99 + tax
HOT HOT HOT............

cheers

I'm on a college network, is there any way I could use this to connect two computers to the one ethernet jack I'm allotted?

Kindlr, yes, that's exactly what NAT does for you. No one would have any clue if you have one or four PC's running off it.

OK, but I need to know if theres a way to physically link the two. I see it has a WAN connector (intended for DSL/Cable modems I assume) which runs at 10mb/s, the lines we have here are 100mb/s, would there be a way to connect at the higher rate using an unused port in the router (i'll only be connecting my laptop and PC) and if not would connecting the WAN port allow it to work but only at the slower speed? If only the thing had an uplink..

just plug that ethernet cable from the outlet into that WAN port, then connect the computers into the other ports... and you shouldn't notice the speed hit. Speed wise, I think your school network is probably still the bottleneck even though it's 100mbit, school networks are hardly traffic free and routed properly. You only need the router if you are assigned ONE IP addy, otherwise you should have a DHCP server of some sort and you'd just use a regular switch.

FWIW, that uplink port is good if you are using the ROUTER to hook up to a switch/hub. It really isn't an issue at all b/c as it's been said several times, just use a crossover cable.

If you need more help take it to the "Networking" forum or turn on your PMs.

I ordered this online on Saturday for instore pickup, Duluth MN, and got the dreaded email today that this item is out of stock.
Does anybody know if they are going to be getting these back in or is this just a clearance sale?
