Are we talking about model DI-704? My BB shows 79.99 before rebate and on order? Looks like they are OOS!?

Quick deal about to end soon....
From what I read on previous discussion, seem like BB is about to END this incredible deal, maybe due to pricing error?
anyway, I went to local store (knowing that ordering from website is probably not gonna work), saw they advertised it on the shelf for 49.99 - 30 (MIR) = $19.99 pick up, went to register, but it rang up as $79.99, told them the adv. price, showed him the shelf and he changed it to $49.99, then gave me two rebates for $30 & $20, whoa, so I got it for FREE (+tax).
I am a happy camper, glad my 10 miles trip to BB wasn't a waste.
If you live in Houston area, hurry up and get in on this awesome deal
BTW, I got the last one @ BB Sharpstown.

I just got back from the Clackamas store in Portland, OR and got one of these for $59.99... The price rang up on the register as $79.99, but grabbed the shelf tag showing it as $59.99 and got that rang in, and then the register printed out the two rebate forms $20 and $30... I don't know what Best Buys malfunction is this time, but I would raise serious hell at the register if they either didn't honor the shelf price, or refused to give you one of the rebates...

I really can't stand Best Buy, and try to avoid them at all costs, unless the deal is too good to pass up, as this one was...

And if your in Portland, the Airport Best Buy is out of stock, but the Clackamas store had maybe 6-8 of these on the shelves as of 10:30 this morning....

I would have been a real happy camper if I had won one of the AMD kits this morning at the XPP event, but this will do...

Has anyone tried a ShareTheNet setup with something like this? Essentially, setting up a custom Linux setup to dial into an ISP and use an Ethernet card connection out to the WAN port with a crossover cable to provide internet connection sharing? Please PM me if you have some info.

This router would be a great help if I can make something like that work.

Just got back from the Ridgedale Best Buy in MN. They had it on the shelf with a tag that said $59 (plus the MIR). It came up as $79 at the register but the girl adjusted the price when I showed her the shelf tag. The register printed out the $30 and $20 rebates plus receipt reprints for each.

They still had two left on the shelf if anyone still is looking in the Mpls, MN area. They also had a bunch of the free NICs.

Just grabbed my D-link NIC and the router after placing the order online. This is their "gateway" unit...it's a router AND a switch.....plus hardware firewall. Great deal for $10 (and really $5.00 after my profit from the NIC )

Thanks.

You mean they're charging $70 for a linux router disk image??? What a rip off, you can do all that on your own for free!

OK, back to the point. I think you're confused. This D-Link "gateway" does exactly what ShareTheNet does, except the D-Link router has 4 LAN ports already on it. All you do is hook up your DSL, Cable, or other ethernet-based network to the WAN port on the router, and you just plug in your computers into the other ports. There is no need at all for ShareTheNet if you have this router. Also, the D-Link router has a serial connection to hook up an external modem and can share that if you don't have DSL or Cable Internet access (which it sounds like is what you want to do).

So basically don't bother spending the $70 on ShareTheNet - those guys are trying to make money off of what is freely available. You're better off just spending the money on an external modem if you don't already have one and want to share a dial-up connection.

Hope this helps

Went to the BB site and it's listed as 79.99. Anyone have any feedback on this?

For Kindle: The power that be may not be able to tell that you have two machines hooked up. However a
good sysadmin usually monitors traffic. I know that we produce traffice reports of heavy users every day. The
heavy users are monitored and if suspected that they are using unauthorized machines they may be blocked
access altogether. This is a fairly easy process. Also we can put a sniffer on the network and see the actual packets
that are being tranferred.

Just remember. Every keystroke that you enter while on a network CAN be trapped.

Networking 101: If you cascade hubs/switches you will take a performance hit. Most of us do not use our entire
home network bandwidth anyway and so we may not notice it. Try putting an FTP server on your home network,
then download a 1 gig file and try to get on the 'Net and see your machine crawl. I use an 8 port hub for my home
network and, if I had too, would not be afraid of cascading another hub/switch to my current switch. I would just
look to cascade to those devices on my network that are the least "talkative".

Regarding the "SharetheNet" comment/queston.

You can always do a google for "Linux Router Project" or "Tom's Boot Floppy" for info on turning a tired old
PC into a router. It essentially consists of putting two Ethernet cards into a beat up old machine. Booting from
the floppy, waving a magic wand to configure both Ethernet cards. Use one card to connect to the 'Net and the
other to connect to a switch and you have your own home grown router.

I have the equipment and knowledge to do it but don't bother. It's a lot easier to use a router or router/switch and
a lot cheaper too (in time).

i was wondering whether this router will work with any other nic cards not listed on the box?..i just tried using this w/ my netgear nic and it didn't work. Maybe i'm just a networking newbie, which i am but hopefully this routr works with other nic cards out there.

This is what u will have to to in order to get the $59 price in store.

it will probably ring up to be $79.. and you will have to go grab the tag that says it's $59.. and they will
adjust the price for you.

yep works with everything, don't see why it wouldn't.

my network has SMC, SIS, Intel, and a Linksys NICs! Works beautifully! Make sure you have it setup for DHCP (Obtain IP address automatically) if you're network is setup that way. Or try "releasing" your current IP addy with winipcfg

and yes, both rebates work (SHOULD, if not keep records of everything and GIVE THEM HELL!).
and yes, a COPY of the UPC will work for the BEST BUY rebate.

Anyone else notice that the mailing address on the "printed Register Rebate Form" from the B&M store doesn't match the mailing address on the Online rebate form (for both the router and the NIC)...(Best Buy Rebate...not the Manufacturer)?
Both go to the same zip....different offers and PO boxes....

Strange..

Update: Came home, went to bestbuy.com and ordered it, printing out all 4 rebate forms. At that point (1:30ish) it was still $59.99, but it was also in my cart from the night before (2AM). Got the confirmation e-mail around 6:30 saying the order was ready to be picked up, and shlepped all the way back to Crossgates Mall. Went to the counter and got the router and NIC from the cute girl workin the counter (beats the hell out of the old hag who hassled me last time) and she even printed out the rebates from the register so they say copy of UPC on the BB ones. Lesson learned: Go to cute female cashiers whenever possible.

Kind of off topic, but what firmware is coming with your Dlink router? I have 256b6, which I assume is a later build than the 255b15 that Dlink is showing as there latest build on there website...

I noticed the same thing. Guess D-Link does a better job updating their products than their websites.. makes me wonder about that "lifetime tech support" they offer.
