Circuit City has the 80 gig 8meg cache 7200 rpm se drives with 3 year warranty for 99.99 minus $50 in rebates.

Not a bad deal I don't think, you can't order it online, but my store had at least 4 of them on the shelf.

edit:

$20

$30

Then, we never knew how easy it would be to fill up a 250GB hard drive.

My boss just "paid" me in rebates for this drive and I notcied: Theye no longer call it "Special Edition" I guess 8MB cache is the norm now and 1-year of warranty certainly isn't anything "special"

ALOT. A recently manufactured 80GB drive is probably a "single ultra-high-density-platter" drive That's almost 3x the sustained transfer rate performance of the first 80GB Special Edition drives Can you imagine comparing that to even a single-platter 20GB drive? Plus, there's a chance the 20GB drive is a triple-platter 5200RPM 2MB cache drive (Snail)

I remember drooling over a 540MB hard drive but couldn't afford it at $345.00, so I stuck it out with my 340MB drive for another year.

As long as we're getting nostalgic, Last year I found an old DOS manual in our computer room. Really nice 3 ring binder, heavy paper. I was reading through it and had to chuckle at the installation instructions

"If you have a hard drive....."

Read the fine print:
- Offer valid in United States of America only.
- Offer not valid with other offers unless specified by
the offer.

Limit 1 rebate(s) or other promotional offer(s)
per person
per address
per household
Sounds like you're stuck with the $30 only.

No, they are two seperate valid rebates. You can't buy two drives and use two of each rebates.

I remember those days. I think I did the same thing, I could only afford the WDAC340 model myself.

And then later on, a few years later, a couple of 1GB WD drives and 1.2GB Conners, all for roughly $300 each.

Last week, a 160GB WD for $180 - $80 in rebates. How things change.. Ironically (or perhaps not really), my old 340MB and 1GB WD drives still run perfectly fine (that is, if they don't have problems spinning up), but the last few high-capacity newer drives that I've had, all have had "issues" within a year or two. Those old drives though, they just keep on running.

So it looks... but...
Limit 1 rebate(s) or other promotional offer(s)
So maybe it overrides? Dunno, sure looks like it.

Here is the deal on the rebates, one rebate is from WD and one from CC.

The one from CC you have to make a copy of the UPC code, WD wants the original.

They are "stackable" both printed at the register for me. After pricematching my radeon 9800 the and with rebates the drive is free for me

Note to Czroe on the warranty.

Some of these 8 meg cache ses had 3 yr warranty and some only had one. The warranty period, at least for the 3 yr, is written across the front of the box. Same price on both of 'em

When it's advertised and specifically crafted to both be valid, then they are force to honor it so it's really moot.

Nearly all HDD deals involve double rebates (Manufacturer + Retailer)

Yes. exactly but I think the KEY words are actually "Special Edition"

Traditionally, all SE drives were 3years but it is said that they no longer are when in fact they are simply no longer special edition at all! Same model number / performance, but they are no longer designated Special Edition.

Why not just get the 120 GB WD SE (3 yr warranty) at Best Buy for $47 instead of 80 gig maybe SE for $50?

Well, the chances of getting a 3-year warranty drive are probably about the same for either. WD changed their warranty terms as of Oct. 1, 2003. Retail-packages "SE" drives only carry a 1-year warranty as well, so any packages that still say "3-year" on the box, are old stock, and are sure to disappear fairly soon.
