MrBLUNT is correct. And yes, I have also tried it. You can just pop one of these CDs into a semi-recent Dell (since XP came out) and you won't be prompted to enter a key or have to activate it. Install it on a non-Dell system and it installs just like a regular OEM copy of WinXP: you'll have to activate it and get prompted to enter a key. Of course WGA is new and you'll have to validate WinXP again or use a workaround.

The Dell OEM CDs have a couple of other minor changes: a small directory on C:\DELL is created with 3 small files (1 htm, 1 gif, 1 jpg) and the start menu will have a Dell Solution Center entry under the Run... option. Delete those 2 things and it's pretty much a regular installion of WinXP.

My father bought it and i installed it for him. They were OEM dell branded CDs, they installed just like normal xp pro and they activated just like normal xp pro. It was on an AMD system even, so the pc had nothing to do with dell. It works fine to this day and i can tell no difference between it and any other xp pro that i have installed.

Yeah thats why my dell XP cd has been installed on 4 different motherboards none of them a DELL! I have never had any trouble doing an update and using my Dell XP cd.

Should note though OP this $79 deal is CD ONLY no COA so if you dont have the serials you need to find some. They have it there with the COA for $99 I think I saw.

Now my windows 98 Dell cd is a different story. It will only install on a dell unit.

True if installed on a Non Dell unit it will work but you MUST HAVE THE COA... No coa = usless cd. The nice part if you do have a dell unit it wont ask for COA code and will validate the WGA check without ever typing in anything.

Because buying a CD in a way that M$ does not make money is just like getting a pirate copy regardless if the CD is made by M$ or not. If it isn't legal to use it, why bother buying it and use it while you could download it from some p2p sites ?
