I'd be happy if someone here could enlighten me about the folllowing:
I own two Dell laptops, both came with WinXP Pro. However, only one
(let say #1) came with WinXP installation CD (Dell stopped shipping CDs
with their laptops sometime during spring 2005). I wiped out XP from #2
and installed Linux (that's what I need for work).
Now the twist to the story -- I decided to get a desktop for home, to use
as family archive / web-server. Of course, I built it myself. I legitimately
own two copies of WinXP (or so I think), but I'm not using one (laptop #2 runs
Linux). So I'd like to put the unused copy of WinXP on my home desktop, but
recall that my laptop #2 did NOT come with WinXP installation CD. So, I took
the WinXP CD that came with laptop #1 (the one that still has WinXP on it) and
used it to install WinXP on my home desktop (which was disconnetcted from the
network at the time). Nowhere in the installation was I prompted to enter
a 'key' of any kind (is 'key' the alphanumeric sequence I find on the COA
glued to the back of my laptop?). Will I be promted to enter a key once
my home desktop connects to the Internet? (I plan to use the COA of the
laptop #2, which currently runs Linux). The thing of concern to me is that
if I go into 'System Properties / General' on my home desktop, it shows
Registered to:

beloved me
12345-OEM-1234567-12345

where the '*-OEM-*' string is the same as on my laptop #1.
My questions:
1) am I on the right side of the law?
2) do they (MS) have ways to find out?

Just install it and use the same key as #1. No one will find out. I'm running on xp pro that has been past around multible times. To Thy Own Self Be True"

Why do you say that? See my post above -- I did exactly
that: installed WinXP on a non-Dell PC using Dell's CD without
ever typing in any 'key' of any sort...

Wow! Did any of you nay-sayers bother to read the info on the url link that Cygnus posted?

Now, I'm the first one to state that you should only believe half of what you see, but this is really legit.
The reason it exists in the first place is that it is not current! i.e.not XP(SP2).

I can only assume that Dell Bought a ton of these and only managed to sell ½ to ¾ Ton by the time SP1 &/or SP2 came upon the scene.

If you need one (or ten) just get 'em...no sweat.
The FBI would be all over this if it weren't ok. edirectsoftware.com would not have lasted a day and ½!

SP2 is kind of meaningless as, given the massive security problems, even SP2 is out of date from the second you install it. Not sure if you can still download them individually, or order the CDs, but I have SP1 and SP2 on separate CDs, ready to install after I install my original copy of XP Pro.

SP3 is on the way and soon to be released., but is not available as yet
Just don't get one of the "Phony SP3s" floating around out there. You'll get burned.

When my Dell had to bge repaired I asked the tech about installing Dell XP on other computers and he said I could legally install it on up to 3 computers and it works on any computer. After 30 days it has to be activated.

Do an OEM preinstall and you can "pre-activate" it. Check out Unattended XP Guide for more info on slipstreaming and such....

At least they are honest.

Here at eDirectSoftware.com, we
take software piracy very seriously!

It takes a while for Microsoft to shut down a company, they warn them a few times first.

Do you really want some sketchy company to have your credit card number and billing address?

I'm cheap but I'm not that cheap yet.

Taken from Microsoft.com:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/counterfeit.mspx

Type of Counterfeit: Scam / Re-bundled software

CDs that are genuine but are not intended for resale are bundled with COAs and EULAs from illegal sources. In some cases, all of the components are genuine, but they were not produced to be sold together, which makes the whole product counterfeit. Look on CDs for text such as ?Not For Resale? and on COAs for the names of companies other than those from whom you bought the software or the acronym OEM if you did not purchase the software preinstalled on a PC.

so what's the cheapest legal windows, the educational edition?

and what if i have a pc that comes with it a system restore disc, and this disc is the only way to put the OS back whilst at the same time including all useless pc utilities of the pc maker along with it.

I just need Windows XP SP2 Prof. cd clean, as presumably I own the license...have the prod key etc. already as well as activation code I guess.

Sure I can go the 'warez' route but these days I'm not sure which warez group's release to 'trust'...

But you go the warez route, you can install a version that doesn't require anything to be typed in anyway.

Here's my experience in installing WinXP using Dell CD on a non-Dell PC.
My company buys Dells, but wipes WinXP off and puts Linux on them, so
we have plenty of installation CDs and COAs around. With Ok from the boss
I got one of those home. Installation was smooth (and I did not have to type
any numbers in), but I did get "You have 30 days to activate" balloon message.
So, I clicked on it and proceeded. I chose the telephone option (don't think it
matters though) and punched in the 9x6=54 digits of the installation ID. The voice
said the ID was invalid (eventhough it confirmed each 6 digit set with a clink).
I pressed the "generate another ID" button in the activation window, and it
prompted me for the COA code (25 character alphanumeric code one finds on
brand-named PCs sold in stores). I typed that one in, and got a new installation ID.
I called MS again and gave the new installtion ID, I got an activation code from
them and successfully completed the activation.

Great app! Makes slipstreaming a breeze.

Would even be more valuable if it did hotfix slipstreaming. Been a long time since SP2; lots of hotfixes since then that have to be manually slipstreamed.

well if they are dell oem cds, then dell must have originally purchased them from microsoft...so yes i think they are. its not like they are a burned copy of xp.

are they anymore legal than borrowing your friends copy...probably not.
