crap, my DVD only does DAE at 10X... i wouldn't even be able to dup audio CDs at half the potential of the burning. i don't think i should get it, i would get very depressed =) but yamaha does not do burn-proof--they have their own method of of ensuring no coasters. isn't it called waste-proof or something?

on the 16x version, waste-proof = 8MB cache.

and i did not like it too much

Hopefully, they redisigned this model from scratch.

We're paying more and more for less of an improvement. From 4x->8x, it was about 10 minute improvement per cd. From 8x->20x it's about a 6 minute improvement. I'd rather get two 12x10x32x's with BURN-Proof for less

How long until DVD+RWs become mainstream

Whats the big deal about getting faster burners? I'm still sitting on my Plextor 8/20X SCSI which copies everything including safedisk 2. I saw a big improvement over my old Panasonic 7502B 4X, can't you guys wait a few minutes. And one last thing: IDE SUCKS AND SO DOES BURNPROOF!

My, My, A little on a high horse aren't we!

I see that you are taking advantage of IDE interface in your computer (albeit not your burner). So doesn't that make you a little bit of a hypocrite?

I have to make some concessions as SCSI DVD's are rare and expensive, it is my profound wish that I didn't have an IDE DVD. It sucks incredibly for doing things like ripping DVD's or even just MP3's, high cpu use and makes the system unresponsive. Its the only IDE item in my computer and I would get rid of it in a heart beat if I could find a SCSI DVD on the for sale board

I'm not really serious about IDE being suck, it works OK but I prefer not to use it if at all possible

SCSI Controller
SCSI HD
SCSI CD-ROM
SCSI CDR

The heart of my system, which will probably be carried on to my new AMD thunderbird system

I agree with that statement. Not everone can afford SCSI. I think the IDE stuff has come a long way and is great deal for the $$$, if you can't afford SCSI or really don't have a need for it.

Yamaha new burn do have burn-proof but its call exclusive Triple Protection Architecture, check it out:

"...Yamaha US announces the introduction of the industry's fastest internal and external ReWritable CD recorders. The all-new, multi-platform LightSpeed(2) CRW2200 Series models are capable of recording on CD-R discs at an industry-first top speed of 20X, writing a full CD in under four minutes; rewriting CD-RW discs at a top speed of 10X; and reading CDs at a sustained maximum rate of 40X. In addition, the CRW2200 Series allows users to rip audio CDs at a maximum speed of 40X-up to 66 percent faster than conventional CD-RW recorders currently in the marketplace-allowing digital audio extraction of a 74-minute audio disc in less than three minutes.

To achieve the industry's fastest CD-R write speed, Yamaha developed the CRW2200 Series to take advantage of Partial Constant Angular Velocity (P-CAV) technology, a combination of CAV and standard Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) technology, for optimum performance. The CAV recording method keeps the disc rotation speed constant while adjusting the data transfer rate depending upon which portion of the disc is being recorded.

In addition to utilizing conventional CLV recording at 2X, 4X, 8X, and 10X in rewriting mode, the CRW2200 also supports the 4X-10X CAV mode.
Yamaha CRW2200 CD-RW recorders will also be the first CD recorders to use the Yamaha SafeBurn System with its exclusive Triple Protection Architecture. The SafeBurn System provides the new recorders with an advanced buffer underrun control system, an 8MB buffer and Yamaha's Optimum Write Speed Control which, by checking a disc's capability and the recording conditions, allows LightSpeed(2) recorders to select the optimum writing speed to further improve reliability.

The new CD Mastering software included in CRW2200 Series includes Ahead Software's award-winning Nero, along with the new InCD for packet writing, NeroMIX for audio ripping, Nero Wave Editor for audio file editing. Also included in CRW2200 External format models are Ahead Software's NeroMAX for CD Mastering using Macintosh computers. All U.S. retail pack LightSpeed(2) recorders also feature Adobe's PhotoDeluxe (for IBM) and PhotoShop LE (for Mac) digital imaging products.

Yamaha's new LightSpeed(2) family will feature five models: the internal CRW2200EZ using E-IDE (ATAPI) interface, shipping in May 2001; the internal CRW2200SZ using Ultra SCSI (SCSI-3) interface; the external CRW2200SXZ using Ultra SCSI interface and the external CRW2200FXZ using IEEE 1394 FireWire technology, available in June 2001. The external CRW2200 USB 2.0 model will be available in late July 2001..."

Not a Yamaha, but here's a reputable place that has a Ricoh 20x10x40 in stock for $219.98 plus $7 shipping via UPS ground: Hypermicro. Their Resellerrating is a 6.7... not bad!
