Warner Brothers to impose 56 day wait on DVD rentals

This really shows how out of touch Hollywood is with the public. Not too long ago they had declining ticket sales at the box office, and then came 3D. Well, what did Hollywood do? They charged EXTRA for 3D. I mean WTF? You are already having problems selling tickets, why are you charging EXTRA for some gimmick that's getting people to come back to the theaters?

Sidenote: I didn't know it was coinstar that came up with Redbox. That company is awesome!

It wasn't. It was actually funded by McDonalds. Then sold it to them. I believe they were testing some ideas, and the dvd rental kiosk idea worked out.

I really don't see how this affects anything. If they increase the wait period from 28 to 56 days, there will be one 28 day period where I don't rent anything because nothing new is out and then on day 29 all the releases they held back are available and once again I can get them on Red Box or on Netflix by mail. Am I wrong here? The whole reason I rent is because I'm not paying $18 bucks for something I'm going to watch once and never again until it ends up on tv. I'm STILL not going to go out and buy the damn discs no matter how long the wait.

Actually, the DVD rental providers can just buy the actual retail version and then rent it out to you. That's how it has been done before. It takes longer to make your money back, but you could do it. DVD rental providers just get theirs at a lower cost, however I wouldn't be surprised if that part of the chain has been changed already.

I think I rented two movies in 2011. That was UP from none in 2010. I spend money on about 2-4 movies a year, either I watch them in theaters then buy them and thats it. Everything else that comes out of that town is garbage.

I hope Redbox and Netflix continue to deliver what the market actually wants, and not what some disconnected suits THINK it needs.

It appears that the old bears in charge still think that it's 1976, when they lived on decades of no home video, er-releasing whenever they wanted, and selling to the TV networks for limited license for piles of cash.
