For those who don't want to wait pirated copies will be available immediately just like usual.

Theatrical releases (where you can't skip previews, no menu options, no bonus material), long wait times to rent, refusal allow rental streaming (*cough* HBO *cough*) ever increasing amount of unskipable warnings - Its like they want to drive customers to pirate movies.

But the 'lets make it as painful as possible to enjoy a rented movie so they will buy it instead' business model has worked out soooo well for them so far so why not continue it?

Sidenote: I didn't know it was coinstar that came up with Redbox. That company is awesome!

Meh, your average Joe will probably just blame Netflix / RedBox.

That wasn't my point. Who is to blame doesn't matter it will still increase piracy. Look what happened with music... now music purchases went up this year when it became easier and easier to simply buy instead.

i know knee jerk u can say folks will pirate, but they would regardless. so i guess in theory its just an exclusive period like the in theater period, you never know, it might work. the folks that will pirate it won't be stopped, even during the theater exclusivity period, no doubt but they may make more from sales even so because the pennies they get from dollar rentals is not worth protecting.

Do they still rent dvd's out? Thought that market seen its arse long ago.

Same old same old blame piracy. I mean have you ever seen a pirated movie. Awfull sound the movie screen looks like its lying on his side and sometimes some tart gets in the way the whole time. Most people that own dvds and such get dvds for their quality. Lots of people go buy them. They are doing this so they and their music fat cats can have some excuse to get certain laws passed concerning the internet. They want to have access to where people go and do on the net. I mean you cant sue someone for breaking copyright laws if your not able to watch them. Since its civil they would have to get access to avg surfing habits

why are we talking about piracy? this is just a way to try and get people to buy the dvds because the redbox and netflix wait will be longer. I don't think it will have much of an impact on pirating. gonna hurt netflix for sure, which is the point

That article was written poorly. Does this delay only affect Netiflix / Redbox? or does it affect all rental channels? Ie. Netflix, Redbox, Blockbuster, etc?

I bet a lot of people that download movies only intend on watching them once. $1 or $2 might be enough to say "Screw it, I'll just rent". A few cents from a rental is still better than no sense with this policy.

They can decide to wait a year if they wanted to. The longer they push a movie back, the less chance there is of me renting it and deciding to buy it because I liked it. Hell, I already have trouble remembering movies that came out in the theaters 5 months ago. I rarely go to the theaters (maybe once a year) because of price. I don't typically buy movies unless I've seen them once, so if they want to make them a distant memory to me, then more power to them.

I can understand the reasoning for this on the surface, but I feel like this is one of those things where they need to look a little deeper to decide if this is really helping or not. Trying to keep your product out of the hands of people who want a good price seems like a bad move.

Movie sales are down in the last 7 years because fewer and fewer good movies are coming out. Seriously, there's only a handful that I've said "I probably will want to watch this more than once, so I'll buy it". And most of those have been bargain bin purchases.

You people who think this will increase piracy are the pirates already and just trying to justify obtaining movies in such a manner. I don't think you realize that not many people actually know how to pirate. Young people do but older adults don't and don't care to.

The movie industry, much like the music industry, is populated with selfish idiots with huge egos and no brains. This move only hurts them. People know they can rent for $1.30 from Redbox or $8/month from Netflix so the only RATIONAL solution to this move is to WAIT, and that is what your average smart adult will do. It will not increase sales, in fact it might actually decrease them when movies fall out of the mind of people who wanted to watch them because they are delayed in the rental channels.

This will not increase PPV or sales. The people willing to use those options will continue to do so for the must have movies but they are likely to wait for the not so important ones. What is two months? Fill up your Netflix que with stuff you haven't seen and you will never catch up. You will just be waiting a couple of months for new releases. Big deal.

its wont increase piracy, those that pirate movies already do, people aren't just gonna randomly start doing it, especially anyone over 30, they will simply not buy them or wait longer to rent them

In case anyone else hasn't mentioned it, I will: this will only hurt the paying customers which in turn may turn some into pirates.

Factor in that it'll cost an average family a 100 bucks to see a movie in the theater too. Two parents, two kids, soda and popcorn for each.

Purchasing a decent home theater system isn't exactly the domain of the super rich any more.
