I RMA a gigabyte motherboard once. After I got it back one of the heat sink was loose, so I had to attached to the board with a zip tie.

MIR are worse. they are outsourced to companies that specialize in mismanaging those to maximize the chance of not having to pay you. MIRs are a scam. sometimes you do get it, but its not worth the effort and often times you don't get it at all.

There was a 30 dollar MIR for my 4850. I purchased it in Oct 2008. I sent in the MIR in Oct 2008. I didnt get the rebate check until July 09 lmao.

I'm with the video cards being less reliable due to thermal stress and greater complexity. I've had to RMA 2 out of my last 6 video cards - one for artifacting at load and one for a failed fan - and I consider that "good hardware luck." Just like hard drives I am considering buying video hardware B&M only for ease of exchanges.

Wow, talk about bad luck. I've never had issues with none of my cards, only recently my 6 years old X800XT PE after changing of hands, it got back to me and start gaving me issues with lines across all the screen, a VRAM issue. But my 9700PRO, X1950XT, HD 3850 and my current card is working like a champ.

Sorry to hear about your RMA story with MSI. However, given your history of videocards, I cannot believe that 3 out of 8 graphics cards you purchased failed; that's bad luck. It may be that:

1) Your case is very poorly ventilated
2) You have cheap power supplies that eventually cause component failure
3) You have poor electrical current regulation through the wall socket
4) There were a series of poor batches of cards and you happen to the unlucky dude.

I've had pretty good luck up until the last two cards (the 4870 and 5770). My 8800GT and 3850 are great cards and I still use them. The one's I listed are just the one's I've owned and not all the one's I've built. (I've built well over 50 machines) And you can you usually tell a bad card right away (the 6800 and 5770 artifacted pretty much out of the box). The 4870 artifacted when stressed and progressively got worse until it just started happening anytime a game was loaded. I actually find the less expensive cards seem to be more reliable possibly because they run cooler and aren't expected to have the huge performance like the high end cards. It's also occurring to me based on my experience that the more recent batch of cards have a higher risk of failure. You would be surprised just by reading the reviews on Newegg just how many cards now a days arrive DOA.

I've had quite an experience with Diamond for an RMA on a 4890. Original owner bought it and it started dying 2 months later, he sent it in on an RMA and it took just over a month to get the replacement. he upgraded during that time and I picked up the unopened replacement. it lasted all of 2 weeks before it totally failed, sent this one back for a replacement (had to pay shipping charges there and back!) new card comes in and the fan is failing out of the box. thing grinds and growls at anything under 40%, fortunately I had a spare fan, no luck on getting any kind of response from diamond. last time I'll ever buy a diamond card.

On a side note regarding the replacement card for my replacement card (the 5770) newegg has been absolutely stellar in their customer support. They even paid for and emailed me a shipping label for me to send it back. And both cards arrived the very next day. I just wish they're guaranty lasted a little more than 30 days.

thats one of the good ones... many times they don't send them at all, you call and they ask you to prove you really sent it. etc

Update 3/23: Called them yesterday because I still haven't received my check. It's been 10 days since they said they would mail it out. Howard answered my call and told me he would email me once he found out the status. Got home after work and still no email so I called and emailed him to leave him a message. He finally emailed me back telling me the check would be mailed by Friday.... I wouldn't be surprised if after Friday they tell me to wait 5-10 more business days. That seems to be the norm. MSI = Fail

I'm not going to defend MSI here, they seem to have done a horrible job of taking care of you, but one thing to consider is that business do not usually cut checks on a daily basis. Some only do it once or twice a month. So the 8-10 days may be accurate if the person submitting the check request missed the window.

Overall MSI= Thanks for updating your thread.

That sound stupid.

One of advantages of living in EU is that when I need RMA all I need to do is to send it for RMA to shop where I bought it and they have 30 days to take care of entire RMA - if they dont finish RMA in 30 days I get my money back.

Interesting that EU has better consumer protection than the US. It used to be the opposite but we've decided that companies are more important than people.

Rebates checks are handled by a third party not the manufacture itself. Which case the third party losing a MIR isn't exactly news... happens so often its why a lot of us on here don't both with them.

I returned a xfx 8800GT a while ago, they were pretty quick about 2 weeks turn around, but the problem is that it was a used one. Probably refurb I can see scratches on the card, very dirty. but it actually worked so I had no complaints.

If you'll look at msi's warranty it only pays for labor for the first two years and during the 3rd you have to pay for labor.

companies are more important than people.

Welcome to the Republican party.

I must be lucky or really easy on parts as with the 20 or so computers I've built, I've never had to RMA anything. Actually, I did buy a DVD drive long ago from a mom and pop PC store in town when I was desperate. I installed it, put my precious Diablo 2 disc in, heard it wind up, then a large explosion. It completely disintegrated the disc. I took it back and told them what happened, but they couldn't take it back. That after the nerve of selling me a $70 drive I could have got online for $30.

The moral of the story? Fuck local PC stores. I hope they continue going out of business and rot in hell.

The democrats and obama in particular want to force the entire world to enact the bullshit that is DMCA.

A few corrupt corporations (yes, just a few... most small ones and even some of the big ones like google are ok) are calling the shots in Washington... The two parties disagree on everything except the need to fuck you over in the name of the companies that pay them off.
